On May "S there will be an eclipse of the sun. Twice a year it Is obscured by the moon, but It Is very seldom that the phenomenon Is visible along a fifty mile stilp of country, fiom New Orleans to Norfolk, Va offering bet ter opportunities for study by scien tists than any eclipse within a genera tion. Extraordinary preparations are being made, therefore, for observation. Pro fessors Pickering, of Harvard; Stone, of Virginia; Hale, of the Yorkcs obser vatory, aio among the eminent as tronomers who will take records of the eclipse with spectroscopes, camoias and many other scientific instruments. Eu ropean scientists will also he In the field, their stations being In Spain and Algicis, whoie the path of darkness will move after Its (light across the Atlantic ocean. In this city wo will not see the total eclipse. Wo will see four-fifths of the sun's surface obscured n'y the shadow of the moon, the phenomenon lasting from about 7.30 till about 10 o'clock In tho morning. Tho nearest approach to daikncss when only one-fifth of light will escape tho black shadow will be between S.30 and 9 o'clock. It will be dark enough to compel the use of arti ficial light for at least an hour. In New Oilcans, Mobile, Montgomery, Atlanta, Columbia, Rallcgh, Norfolk and other places In that belt there will be such a sight as men have traveled half-way around the globe to witness. For something like two minutes "the sun will be turned Into darkness." A puiple twilight will settle down and where the glaring sun was will hang a ring of lire, the centre aydlsk black as midnight. To witness that strange, glorious spectacle, scientists will spend thou sands of dollars and weeks of arduous preparation. In the "few seconds that It lasts they hope to be able to gather data that will advance science Incal culably. Should tho day be cloudless, they will obtain photographs of price less value. These may solve two great questions first, whether there Is a planet between Mercury and the sun, and second, the cause and composition of the sun's cotona. As to the corona of the sun, that dazzling halo of lire which is seen only in eclipse, science is to this day able only to theorize. Some astronomers be lieve It to be an envelope of hydrogen gas, others that it is an electrical dis turbance similar to the aurora borealls. The observations and photographs to be obtained this month may solve this problem, a puzzle for generations. OLYPHANT. Tho residence of Postmaster S.
