"The Christian."
This afternoon nnd evening Hall
Calne's play, "The Christian," founded
on his famous novel of the same name
and adapted by the author for the stage
with singular success. Is the attraction
at the Lyceum theatre.
The company numbers over fifty peo
ple and Includes among the principals
that most charming and delightful
woman and actress, Eflle Ellsler. This
fact In Itself Is a source of gratifica
tion to those who enjoy purely legiti
mate effort and where among tho stars
Is theie a woman with marked ability
that has worked harder than Miss Ells
ler? There are many reasons why Miss
Ellsler bhould make an Ideal Glory
Quayle.
Of course, there Is always a local sen
timent behind Eflle Ellsler here, but
stripping the situation of all Its senti
mental phases, Miss Ellsler Is stiong
as a player and stands very high :n
tho estimation of people In general.
Her success, her standing in the affec
tions of hundreds of thousands, are
vivid Illustrations of the fact that
cheap, tawdy advertising pays only for
a day and cannot compare with the re
sults that honest effort, backed by tal
ent, bring to an actress. James M.
