Coal Barons Batter Scranton Pitchers All Over the Lot Kervin and Jnmleson the Victims. The Scranton base ball team yettcr day nfternoon suffered Its first defeat on th home grounds In the presence of over 1,000 persons. The worst part of the victory of our opponents was the fact that the latter were none other than "Mercy Dei by Day" Cly HUT unci his band of Wllkes-Barre Coal Batons. They defeated Scranton by nut-batting the local players, falling on the ctuves of Southpaw Kervin in 11 man ner which caused Manager Burnham to haul him from the box In the sixth Inning and rcplaco him with Jamleson, tho Indian. The red man, In his first inning In the box, gave two bases on balls, inado one error himself, also had a wild pitch and was touched up for two hits. He did not make himself a paitlcular favorite with the crowd In this Inning, and there wore numerous cries of "Lo, tho poor Indian I" "Send that redskin back to hlB wigwam, Burnham" mid th.e like. However, JuinUson wasn't feeling paitluularly well, and wan In no condition to pitch.' At the bat, however, he made him self 11 rousing favorite by cracktn? out a single nnd double on his two ap pearances at the plate; Tho Wllkes-Barre men had on their battlnar clothes, and not Amoa Ruslo, hlmsslf, at tho height of his glory, could have stepped them. Kervin and Jumlesop looked Very much alike to the sluggtrs from down the valley, and Clymur and his boys biffed the leatlwr to their heart's content, young Burns, the affair Is assured. Tickets are sell ing very rapidly nnd are only 25 cents. Examinations for tenchers profes sional certificates of this borough will be held on Saturday, June 23, by Coun ty Superintendent J. C. AH citizens are Invited to attend the meet ing. Mr. William John left yesterday for his native land, Wales, where he will permanently reside. Rail t cx-Mooslc player, leading with two doubles and a single. Baron Owen was In the box for Wllkes-Bane. He Is tho same yount; mini who has been pitching nearly all of tho vlctoi les for ClymerV men this season, but P.urnhnm'a men touched him up In 11 very lively manner, get ting six sing;!es and thro;? two-hag-gcrs off his delivery. The locals wore very unfortunate In placing their drives, and Kctchem, th. ex-National leaguer, who frlsk.i around the Wllkes-Barri left garden, robbed our batsmen of several seem ingly safe ones. This Fume young Baron Kotchem, In the avventh Inning, tobbed Shefller of a lilt which vvai good for at least three bags, in a bare faced manner, which cause the "good old man" to almost weep. Sheff wait ed for n ball to his liking, nnd when he got it printed his stamp of ap proval upon it by almost tearing the hmse hide off with a dilve that lifted It far over Ketehum's head. The lat ter, however, turned and ran for tho ball like a deer. It looked like an almost Impossible catch, but he made a gieat spring In the air nnd pulled- It down. Wllkes-Barre began hitting Kervin In the third Inning, when a hit by pltclu-r, followed by NIcol's double and Stiotton's single brought In two runs. In the fifth, however, they did their haidest pummellng of the broad shouldered youth. Ketchem, who is ns strong a batsman as he is a fast fielder, made a Rl.igle. and r'lymer. Nyce nnd Burns followed "dth red hot two-baseis, Messltt finally ending the agony by going out to Knox. Kervin was then sent to left Meld and Jamleson left his tepee and made his tppearance on the diamond, "That's a wild Indian." yelled a Wllkes-Barre coacher, and It soon be came apparent tjj,it his words wera only too true. The unfortunate inning referred to above occuired at its close the IVnons had four more iuns. In the seventh and eighth they scored three more. Kcianton looked dangerous In the fifth Inning, when Ken in led off with i a single to right field which singed the grnss. Ferguton followed with a hot one to third, which Nyco was un able to handle, and Short-Stop O'Brien cracked out his second two-baser of the game, bringing home both men and scoring a short while later on Ower.s muffing Jlclntyrp's high tly. Pliefller and Knox both flew out to the ledoubtnble Kctchem an J Doherty clciwcl the inning bv going out. Burns to Kelly. The score follows. bCRAXTOX. A.M. it. II, O. A. l.
