A delightful smoker was tendered
the Excelsior Hose company In their
rooms, on Iackawanna street, Thurs
day evening, by J. W. Malum, John
Lawlcr and Thomas Rogan, three mem
bers of the company. During the c fil
ing' several selections were rendered on
the phonograph. Mr. Anthony Battle,
of South Scranton, gave an Interestlu,
talk on "Tho Fire Extinguisher." Re
freshments were served. There was a
large number present.
The funeral of the late Prank Grimes,
whose remains were- brought to this
place Thursday night, will take place
from tho home of Joseph Kennedy, on
Hudson stiect, tomorrow afternoon at
3 o'clock.

FECKVILLE.
A two-year-old child of Mr. and Mrs,
Patrick Monley, who reside on depot
street, Knst Side, was run down nnJ
badly injured by a horbe und wagon
yesterday morning. The driver of the
outfit, Joseph R. Bell, represents the
Lackawanna laundry, and was deliv
ering laundry at the time. The chllJ
attempted to rross the &ticet during a
whirlwind of dut, which hid the view
of both driver and child. The child
lan between the forward and ie.tr
wheels of the wagon and was knock
ed down, the hind wheel passing over
It lengthwise of the body. Its screens
of pain attracted Mr. Bell's attention
and he iulckly jumped from his vag'n
and picked the child up and carried
It to its homo nearby. Mr. Bell then
summoned Dr. J. B. Glover, who dress
ed Its wounds. The wh?el bad badly
lacerated the face and its little body
was covered with bruises. H Is
thought that the injuries will not prove
fatal.
The ever-busy chicken thief has
again Improved tho midnight hour. -)i
Thursday night the hennetles of
Messrs. Henry Chapman and William
Neatne wete raided The thieves s
curcd twelve chickens at Mr. Chap
man's and as many more at Mr.
Nearne's. So quietly was the nefarious
work done that neither Mr. Chapman
nor Mr. Nearne were aware of their
loss until late yesterday morning.

The semi-annual convention of the
Northeastern Central Luther league
was held In Grace Lutheran church on
Tuesday. The church was decorated
In a very pleasing manner with potted
plants, palms, and the league colors,
black, red, white, blue and gold.
Twenty-five delegates from Scranton,
Wllkes-Barre and Plttston were pres
ent. Papers on the following subjects
were read und discussed: "Church Loy
alty, Its Obligation. Influence, Re
ward," "Spiritual Growth," "Our Iay
Workers," and "The Provldental Call
to New Mission Fields." In the even
ing Rev. Dr. Hunten, of Wllkes-Barre,
gave a very Instructive nnd entertain
ing lecture on "Cyphers."
Ruth, aged three years, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs, George Slglln, died on
Satuiday. The funeral services were
held Tuesday afternoon at the Metho
dist Kplscopal church, In chaise of
Rev. Henry Warden. Interment at
Lehigh cemetery.
