Funeral of the Late Mrs. Mnynard.
Marriage In Sacred Heart Church.

tion at St. James Church.
The funeral of the late Caroline May
nard took place yesterday afternoon.
After a brief prayer service at the
house the remains were taken to the
Methodist Episcopal church, where the
pastor. Rev. J. B. Cook, assisted ,hy
Hev. Fiancls Gendall, of Taylor, con
ducted the solemn services. Both paid
a deserving and touching tribute to the
faithful Christian life of the departed
woman. The service was afterwards
concluded at the graveside. The pall
bearers were C. D. Winter, F. It. mil.
John Hoblnson, William Eastlako, John
Mason and C. U Bell. Among the
llornl gifts was a handsome wreath
from Mrs. John Jermyn. Among those
from out of town present were Willie
Maynard, of AVilkes-Harre: Postmas
ter Thomas, Mrs. John Jones, John
Potter, William Jones, of Carbondale;
George Lloyd and Mrs. Simpson, of
Olyphant; Mrs. Lewis, of Nantlcoke.
There was a very enjoyable surprise
party at the home of Mr. and Mis.
Henry Stone, on Bacon btrcet, on Mon
day evening. About thirty relatives
and friends came together to celebrate
the birthday of Mi. Stone, some of
whom left presents as tokens of their
affectionate regard. The daughters or

Miss Mary Murphy and W. J. Mc
Dermott, two well-known nnd esti
mable young people, were united in
marriage at fi o'clock last evening In
Sacred Heart church by the pastor,
Hev. M. E. Lynott, In the presence of
a largo number of their friends. The
bride was attended by her sister, Miss
Katie Murphy. Until were attired in
exceedingly pretty dresses of steel grey.
Willie MeDorniott, the gloom's cousin,
was groomsman. After the ceremony
the happy couple were surroundrd by
their friends, whose congratulations
and good wishes they received, ana
they were then driven down the valley.
Later they returned to the home of the
bride's mother, where they were given
a great reception. They will commence
housekeeping in their newiy furnished
homo on the East Side.
The Bight Hev. Bishop Talbot was at
St. James Episcopal church last even
ing, where he confirmed a class of thir
teen people. Ho afterwards preached
an eloquent nnd fervent sermon on
"The Insurrection," which was most
earnestly listened to by a congregation
that filled every available seat in the
church. Tile bishop afterwards held a
reception and was presented to the
congregation. Rev. Bnllentlno and
Nash, of Scranton, and C. E. Fessen
den, rector of the church, took part in
the service.
Mr. and Mrs. Gardner, of West .May
field, yesterday iccelved a Inpir and In
teresting letter from their son, Henry,
who is a corporal in Company F, Potty
seventh 1'nlled States Infantry, sta
tioned at the Phlllpines. In his letter
he describes several of the company's
encounters with the natives. He Is

A very pleasant surprise party was
given In honor of Miss Lillian Davis
ut the homo of her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Jenkln Davis, of North Taylor, on
Tuesduy evening. The event was the
fourteenth anlversary of her birth. A
pleasant evening was spent by all.

Work has been commenced on the
excavation for the foundation of the
new hoso house of the Taylor Hose
company, No. 1, which is to be erected
on their lot on East High Btrcet. The
building will be a two-story wooden
structure. The first story will be used
as the engine rooms, while the second
story will be used as their meeting
quarters. The building will be 20x"l.
Samuel Harlos has been awarded the
contract for the foundation, while
Messrs. Peter Schlelds and Arnold
Moore have been awarded the contract
of building.
