At the Academj of Music tonight the Mers conii.iny will lonctudo its engagement by pre senting the "Shadow Detectbe." This afternoon Iho bill will be "Hocky Moun tain Waif." "The Tyranny of Tears." Charles l'rohman's polished and popular star, John Drew, in his newest and most successful play, "The Tjranny of Tears," will be seen at the Ljrcuni on Wednesday. The cast and pro duction will be identical with those seen at the Kmplre theater, New York, during the run of the play, which began with the opening of the pres ent season and was continued until the new jAr. "The Tjranny of Tears" Is by Haddon Cham heis, who will be remembered for his celebrated play of "Captain Swift." The theme of the play, the manner in which a Inline wife tcar-tjrannlzcs a good-natured hus band and the resultant complications, will be found deeply Interesting, and will, no doubt, as was the case In other places where the play has been seen, cause much discussion. A Renowned Company. The Paiges accompanied by their own lompany, (omprisiug eighteen dramatlo and auileillc ar tists, will open a week's engagement at the Aiademy of Music -Monday, April '!, presenting n ihange of bill at each performance, The com panv is stiongely recommended by the press and the opera house management throughout the west as one of the best popular prkc attractions in that section. The play selected for the introduction of the company to Sci anion's theater goers is the high class comedy drama, entitled "Two Nights In Rome," a performance that Is calculated to please the most blase. Lillian Paige will interpret the character of Mephanlc, and be supported by a cast who are specially adapted to their respectiic characters. "The Parish Priest." The fact that a priest represents the leading character in Daniel L. Hart's "The Parish Pi lest" lends inteiest to it, as it is a character that few- playwrights will attempt to deal with. Hut Mr, Hart his taken It In hand and shown the priest in such a' manner that it is unique and at the same time true to life. In most plajs where the priest forms one o' the characters he Is the counsellor and always the quieter of dis turbances, rushing in with uplifted hands and asserting his clerical authority. Father Whalcn does nothing of the sort, except In the second act, where he parts the two brothers in a fight as any oilier man would. Mr. Sully, for whom the part was cieated, is pleased with II, and sjis that he wilt play it for many a jear to come, as he knows and feels confident that it will enjoy a prosperous caieer. "'the tendency of the times," he said, "are becoming more for moral plajs and refined dramas, and while we are at present engaged in educating the people to accept a drama of this sort, our efforts are bound to be a success." "The Parish Triest contains all that Is beautiful anil moral In life. It Is a simple story that ap peals to all. It Is one that after seeing and leaiing the theater one reflects uer. It is also so different from any thing before written. Then, again, It is an Americun play, and, while the priest is the leading character, jet there is no religion in it, and therefore it is acceptable to all classes and denominations. One passage that I think a ery strong one is: "Tho priest for giies, but the man does not." That shows two distinct characters in one, tho priest's forgiveness being sought lor the wrong done to Ids ward, and ho cheerfully ghes it in that capacity, but, as a man, haling the future happiness of the child at heart, he must resent the wrong. "The Parish Priest" will be at the Lyceum next baturdiy afternoon and cienlng. POLITICAL.
