BEDFORD'S PURCHASES.
They Will Furnish Out-of-Town Con
nection for the New Lacka
wanna Telephone Company.
Vice President A. P. Bedford, of the
Lackawanna Telephone company, has
Just acquired a large block of stock In
the Citizens' Telephone company, of
Honesdale, and at the reorganization of
the company on Tuesday last, he was
elected president.
Mr. Bedford has also Just purchased
outright the Wyoming Telephone com
pany of Tunkhannock. Both of these
companies have outside connections
with a number of small towns In the
vicinity, and It would bo a compara
tively easy matter to connect with
Carbondale.
Mr. Bedford positively asserts that
the purchases were made by himself
and for himself and not for the Lack
awanna Telephone company, as has
been stated. It can be easily under
stood, however, that if the new com
pany desires to enter Into long dis
tance connections with either of Mr.
Bedford's companies that he will not
stand In the way, so that connections
both up and down the valley are now
practically assured.
It is pretty near settled that the
Lackawanna company's new exchange
will be located on the fourth floor of
the Republican "building In the quarters
now occupied by the Scrantonlan, that
concern moving to another part of tho
building.
Engineer A. B. Dunning has now
completed the working plan of the
streets through which tho conduits are
to be laid. The contract for tho work,
however, has not been let yet, though
It Is expected that It will be In a few
weeks.
COUNCIL STILL DEADLOCKED.
Another Ineffectual Effort to Elect
a Chairman.
Next Monday the members of the
Olyphant borough council ate to ap
pear in court to show cause why they
should not be removed, because of
their having failed to organize within
the ten duys prescribed by luw.
Thinking to save themselves by an
organization In the Interim tlic.v had
a special meeting Wednesday night and
made another attempt to break the
deadlock.
It was like the ten preceding ef
forts. Gallagher and Van Sickle, the
opposing candidates for president,
each received six votes on sixteen dif
ferent ballots and then adjournment
was made till tonight. This makes sixty-nine
ballots that have been tukn.
A RAILROAD SOCIAL.

the scenery along the route, and at
tho Water Gap tho conductor obliging
ly held the train whllo tho tourists en
