battle between a flying fish and a cock
spinow off the fishing pier at Ocean
Giove hist evening. The novel fight
was witnessed by Asslstnrt City Cler't
II. II. Salter and several other well
known politicians of Trenton, who
were angling off the plot, and they de
sciibe It vividly. The battle was shoit
md fleice, and lesulled in the death of
a sp.nrow, whose strange abode on tho
plei and whose friendly lelations with
the flsheimon had affoided the Idle cot
tage s of th Grove considerable food
for discussion duiing the season.
All summer fiorjuenterH of the fish
ing pier have watched with Interest a
pall of the despised Hnglish spairows
who appaiently had a fascination for
tho rolling, lolllcking ocean. The pier
extends piobably 20 feet Into the
ocean and Is built upon piling. Tho
seething, dashing, lolling waves of tho
ocean spliiMi unceasingly against tho
pier, veiy often the water being forced
between the boards, wetting the feet
of the patient fishermen. Hut notwith
standing this the spnnows early this
spilng built theli nest beneath the door
of tho pier In n nook at tho top ot one
of the pieces of piling. During the day
the cock spairow would have the nest
nhd, hopping about the baskets of this
