New Brake Invention.
A patent wns recently granted xa
Alfred S. Slykor. of Wllkes-Bane. for
a car brake. The Invention ulatos to
car brakes of the class known ns track
brakes, and has for Its object a sim
ple, eillcient nnd reliable track brake,
embodying mechanism in connection
with shoes which are adapted to li
pressed Into contact with the rails,
the shoes having a movement Inde
pendent of the remainder of the op, r
attng mechanism.
They adjust themselves to the rails
and lock themselves against further
movement, so as t slide and produee
an effective frlctionnl engagement,
which will cause a quick stoppage of
the car or vehicle to which the mech
anism Is applied.
Mr. Slyker claims that the public
need not fear to ilde In trolley cars
where there are steep inclines If his
brake Is attached, as it would have
the same effect on the rails In wet
weather ns in dry weather.

Ho named a. Rpruro street saloon aa
the place in w'hlchrhe had suffered his
misfortune, and on being pressed to
tell his full story, the following was
elicited:
"I went In there lut evening an"
stayed th?rn until Just now. Then!
was one of those card. machines In the
place that you drop n penny in, and
over It there .was a sign 'Four Jacks
US.' I turned the crank, let 'cr go and

HAD A NARROW ESCAPE.
Herbert Wlndig Nearly Trampled to
Death.
Herbert Wlndig, of Cross street, had
a very narrow escape yesterday after
noon at about 3 o'clock from being
trampled underneath the hoofs qf a
team of horses.
Wlndlff was crossing Franklin ave
nue near the intersection of Centre
street and was conversing with a
friend who walked with him. The
team of horses was attached to a cab
and was being driven rather recklessly
by the cab man. windljr was so en
grossed with his conversation. that he
did not hear the cab and almost be
fore he knewlt he was knocked down
by the horses and lay for a moment
directly under their feet.
With rare presence of mind, how
ever, he clutched the lower portion of
the harness and succeeded In raising
himself from the ground. The horses
in the meantime were plunging wildly
and tho terrified spectators expected
every moment to see his brains dashed
out. He plucklly held on, however,
and managed to quickly pull himself
to n half standing position out of dan
cer. He wns uninjured except for a few
bruises, but 'his clothes were about as
completely ruined ns they possibly
could be, his overcoat being ripped
from bottom to top In two places.
