A DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.
Fire broke out early esterdny morn
ing In the Torrncc street bakery of
Theodore Elmer. After much difficulty
caused 1y frozen lire plugs, shortngo
of hose find lottcn hose, which was
constantly bursting nl critical time?,
the firemen subdued the Hitmen. The
buildings destroyed were the Elmer
bakery nnd residence, Insurance $1,500
on building and $1,000 on contents:
Henly bnrn, Insurance, $250; Hanks
house, $1,000; Hoban bottling vvusks
and bnrns, no Insurance. The tofil
loss Is estimated between $7,000 and
$$,000. At ono time the residence of
Deputy Hevenue Collector and Mrs. V.
D. Evans was In great danger. Both
were confined to their bed by nines'.

The 18-months-old child of Mr. and

Thursday, after a btlef illness of diph
theria. The funeral will take place
this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment
will be made in Union cemeterv.
Mrs. Leach, of Pittston, is the guest
of Mrs. Edward Tipple.
Rev. Walter Qulncy Scott, D. D., of
Montclalr, N. J., will deliver a lecture
on "A Trip to the Holy Land" In the
Presbyterian church next Ftlday even
ing. The lectute will be Illustrated with

PECKVILLE.
The entlte street system of electric
lighting is ciippled on account of not
having any lamps on hand to replace
those butned out. For a month past
the llghtH have been dropping off one
by one and hide streets have been
lobbed to supply main stteets with
lamps and now Main .stieet Is only
about half Illuminated. The people
living im the daikened sheets uio
up In arms and asking the cause. A
$5,000 Usnse of bonds was made for the
extension of the system to unllghted
stteets and this has not be,n done
jet, and now the piosint sjstem is
crippled for want of lumps. Council
should see that n supply should al
ways be available so that the town
would not be plunged Into daikntss
every few months. The purchasing
agent for the borough Is nware that
ft takes time to get thee lamps and
not wait until they are absolutely
needed belore otderlng. There Is sure
ly a lemedy for this oversight and
the remedy should be applied.
The sevete cold weather Is playing
hnvoc with the water pipes about
town In many instnnces the pipes'
have burst and much damage has se
sulted. The plumbers ate kept busy
attending to such cases.
The Hlakely board of health will
meet at the borough building this
evening.
Mr. D. B. Thomas assumed the post
tlon of track foreman of the Jermyn
section of the Delaware and Hudson
railroad on Thursday.
Mr. S. W. Newton, chairman of the
Wilson Fire company fair and trades
display committee, has received a
