Testing a New Brake on Trolley
Cars Orders That Have Been Is
sued to Lackawanna Road Con
ductors. Tho Delnwaic, Lackawanna and
Western Kalho.ul company Ins pl.tu'd
an order for tho equipment of six en
Blnes by eleetilclty with the Pyle Na
tional Electiic l.lsht company, of Chi-t-nRo.
and . II. Claike, e.mtetn mali
nger of the company, Is now In the
city, and Is busily engaged In fitting
tip the engine's with the necessaiy ap
pliance". The first engine to be fully equipped
whs sent out fiom the iound-houe List
nlcht and was one of the new Mothei
Hubbard make. No. fifl". The test was
cntlicly s-atlsf.iotoiy and new ariange
ment will piove an Innovation in rall
joad clicles In the east. The sstem
Is in genet al use In the wist, and was
adapted by the Rock Island lailroad
when Superintendent FltzQlbbon was
In charge.
He has adapted tho sstem to the
Lackawanna load, and It Is predicted
thut In due time all the engines will be
similarly equlnpcd. No. t'J", when
lighted tip, looks like a mammoth Iron
horse, studded w Ith Incandescent lights
and a searchlight at its head.
Instead of the old dim llanio In the
headlight, theio has been substituted
an electric nic light of 6,000 candle
power, and In Its shaft a newspaper
tan be read a thiid of a mile distant
on a straight tiack. It is a veiitable
searchlight, a safety appliance to guar 1
against collisions, accidents and other
mishaps Incidental to ralhoad life.
In addition to the are headlight, the
two "bllzzaul" lights on either side of
the front end of the boiler ate Illumin
ated by electricity and there are two
Incandescent lamps in the engineer's
cab, and the underneath th" tunning
hoards and bollei to permit the en
gineer and fireman to oil and clean the
engine nnd make what repairs are nee
esaiy without an oil lamp or toich
light.
The engine Is wired similar to a
tiuilding and the current Is supplied by
a turbine engine and dynamo, capable
of supplying thirty-five volts, which Is
entirely harmless to the engineer or
fireman. The dynamo Is 1S6 Inches
nnd Is stationed on the top of the boiler,
Just outside the rear end of the cab.
The appliance can bo opeiated with
the utmost safety, and after an em
ploye becomes used to It, thev don't
want the old style. Men who have tiled
the lights as an expeilment. haw
offered to pay for the equipment of
their engines when the company failed
to provide them.
An eidenee of the alue of the ap
pliance can be gained from the fact
that ninety roads nie now using the
electric lighting system, there being
1,000 engines fully equipped and of that
number 500 wete fitted up during the
past year. Mr. Clarke, who is super
intending the wotk being done on tho
Lackawanna engines, Is an expert elec
trician, and coutteously explained the
stim to The Tribune representative
yesterday. During his stay In the city
he will be pleased to Insttuct englneeis
in the use of the lights.

highly pleased with the singing. It Is
houeel that this Interest In the club
manifested by all the members will be
continued and that no member will nb

Another convenience has been added
