SEWEll OAS EXPLOSION.
A peculiar Incident occurred at tho
corner of West Lackawanna avenue
nnd Chestnut street last evening vvhllo
a number of boys weio coasting on tho
hill, and several of them narrowly es
caped Injury. At that point there Is a
large sewer basin on the southwesterly
corner, and the sewer gas became so
strong that It blew the Iron cover off
the manhole several feet into the air.
The cover Is quite heavy nnd landed
In close proximity to several of tho
boys, who wore badly frightened by
the explosion and escaped without In
Jury. Patrolman Klah Peters was noti
fied and placed a barrel over the man
hole, from which an unpleasant stench
niose. The basin will be fumigated this
morning by tho street cleaning depart
