THE MARKETS.
Wall Street Review.
New York, Dec. 30 The transactions
on the stock exchange today were
more or less interrupted by the holiday
frolics on the brokers' floor, but there
was sufllclent trading In evening up
accounts for the close of the year to
make eiuite nn active market nnd li
tegularlty In prices. The n.iltimo.e
und Ohio stocks after their upward
leap of yesterday were conspicuously
affected, the 1 ommon falling baik
nearly 2',$ und the preferred over 1
point. The most active of the special
ties, including sugar, the tobaccos and
the New York City Traction stocks,
were nlso inclined to re-act, although
the undertone was strong and there
was a disposition to hold Mocks for
the expected demand after the fir-.l
of the e.ir. The expectation of this
demand Is based on the sudden re
lapse In the money rates at all lead
ing financial centers, the London dis
count late falling below the bank rate
today, and the Berlin rate showing a
further decline. This gives ground for
a hope that the export movement of
gold will bo brought to a stop. It Is
possible, however, that the iclaxatlon
In foielgn money rntes miy be based
on e-cpectntlon of further supplies of
gold from this country. Th it being
the case, bnrrkers believe that there
miy be a recurrence of money stiffness
In January. The day's trading ele
inonstrateil that tho level of prices
still offered Inducements for Invest
ment buying. The sales of small lots
of less than one hundred shares con
tinued even moio consplcuosly than on
recent dnjs. All grade of stocks weie
embraced In this demand, down to the
non-dtvldend paying stocks with only
remote prospects of return. The pre
vailing sentiment on the exchange was
decidedly bullish. Total sales, 31R.70ft
Frlces of gilt-edge liquidation invest
ment bonds were not affected In last
week's liquidation, but the Junior grade
or newly Issued contingent Interest
paying bonds, which suffered last
week, have been In good demand this
week.
