Frick Has Retired.
Tho startling Information has been
Iven out at the offices of the Carnegie
Steel company In Pittsburg that Henry
Clay Frick, prominent for u. quarter of
a century as a coke and steel baron,
has retired from the chairmanship of
the board of managers and would here
after remain merely as an advisory
partner In the concern, occupying a
position Blmllar to Mr. Carnegie. At
the same time Henry M. Curry, for
years a director in the company, pre
sented his resignation.
The development occurred at a meet
ing of the company's board of directors
held Monday.
George Lauder and A. M. Moivland,
Partners In tho concern, were elected
to take the places made vacant by the
retirement of Messrs. Frick and Curry.
Following Is the statement given out
for publication by tho company:
"At a meeting of the Carnegie Steel
company, limited, Mr. Frick Informed
his partners of his desire to give up the
duties of chairman of tho board of
managers, and asked to be relieved in
order to Join Mr. Carnegie, Mr. Phlppq
and Mr. Singer as consulting partners
of the company. Mr. Frlck's partners
assented to his request. A successor to
Mr. Frick was not chosen, as It is In
tended to abolish the olllce of chalr
mnn since Mr. Frick loaves It.
"Mr. Curry, who has been long con
fined by illness, sent his resignation as
a member of the board, which his part
ners were forced to accept, with great
reluctance.
"Mr. George Lauder and Mr. A. M.
Moreland were unanimously elected to
All the vacancies."
Reading between the lines thh sta'e
ment is generally accepted to mean
that since Mr. Carnegie has refused to
retire In order to permit Mr. Frlck'a
reorganization plan to go through, the
latter gentleman has decided to quit
the company management as hlthetto
directed by himself In the capacity of
chairman of the board of directors.
The abolition of that position with
Mr. Frlck's official retirement, leaves
Charles M. Schwab, president of jtho
company, as chief executive head' of
the concern.
Begin Work Monday.
That work will be resumed at the
Sloan and Central collieries of the
Delaware, Lackawanna and Western
company on Monday next Is evidenced
from the fact that men are now put
ting things in readiness around the
mines preparatory to starting up. The
blacksmiths have been ordered to rhoe
the mules and the miners are gath
ering their tools from other places ;o
resume operations.
It Is nearly two years since the col
lieries were shut down, but the men
have not been Idle during that time.
Many of them found employment In
other workings, which have been run
to their fullest capacity for some
time, to meet the demands for coal.
With the resumption of work at the
