FARMER GOODRICH'S ADVEN
TURE WITH A WILD CAT.
A Few Echoes from the Rnilroixds.
Prosperous Year of the Delaware
and Hudson A Poem About Jim
mie and Jack Political Pot In
Susquehanna.
Special to The Scranton Tribune.
Susquehanna, Oct. 26. Farmer I.eon
Goodrich, of Klkdale, had a dangerous
adventure on Tuesday. He heard a
great commotion In the barn, where
he kept a young Holsteln bull. The
animal was bellowing as If In great
pain, and now and then came savage
screams and ilerce snarling. Goodrich
thought a large dog had got Into the
barn and was worrying the bull, and
hurried to the spot. On opening the
barn door, he was astounded to see a
large wildcat, with Its fangs burled
In the bull's nostrils, while another
wildcat, nearly as largo, was tearing
at the animal's Hanks. The bull was
rushing about in the lnclosure, bellow
ing in pain, and trying In vain to
shako the wlftlcat from his nose, al
though he dashed the tenacious beast
time and again ngalnst the side of
the barn.
The door of the enclosure opened In
a small barnyard, and when the farm
er recovered from his surprise, he
flung the door open, and, without a
thought of the peril he might place
himself in, ho sprang to the nld of the
bull. Goodrich seized the cat that was
fastened to the bull's nose, and It at
once relased Its hold and turned upon
the farmer and attempted to get at his
throat. The farmer, struggling with
the Infuriated animal that had turned
from the bull to him, backed to the
door, pushed It open, nnd sprang into
the yard, quickly followed by the bull
and the other cat. Mood was flowing
from the hull's nose and from the
numerous wounds In the flank, neck
and side where the wildcats had torn
the flesh with their long, sharp teenth.
Once In the yard the bull seemed to
gain courage, and overcame the pain
and helpless terror Into which it had
been thrown by the combined attack
of the cats In the small lnclosure, and,
turning on Its tormentor, caught the
cat on Its horns and Hung It violently
against the barn. The cat fell stunned
to the ground, and, before It could
recover, ripped It open with its horns
and tossed the body out of the yard.
This had occupied but a minute, hut.
during that time, Farmer Goodrich hail
had a desperato struggle In defending
himself against the other cat, and
preventing It from getting at his
throat. His clothing was nearly torn
from him, and he had been severely
bitten about the head and shoulders.
He had no weapon of any kind, but
ho at last succeeded in getting both
hands on the wildcat's throat, and
clutched It so tightly that the animal
was forced to release Its hold on the
farmer, and struggled to free Itself
from his choking grasp. The struggle
was a fierce one, and Mr. Goodrich at
last hurled the cat with all his
strength against the stone wall sur
rounding the yard.
The tenacity of tho desperate animal
was such that It struggled to Its feet.
and would have renewed the battle at
once, but at that moment tho bull had
Just vanquished the first cat, nnd,
with a furious bellow, plunged forward
and caught tho second wildcat on one
horn, which It thrust Its entire length
In the cat's side, and. with a quick
momement of tho head, disemboweled
the Impaled animal, and tossed It high
In the air. Then Farmer Goodrich
went back to his morning paper.
RAILROAD ECHOES.
Tho Susquehanna shopmen will be
paid on Thursday for services in Sep
tember, In tho aggregate about $50,000.
The report that the Erie will abolish
mileage books and make a general
two-cent rate, lacks foundation in fact.
It may come but not In this year of
grace.
During the season tho Erie has
greatly Improved its road bed and roll
Ing stock.
The Erie was never more prosnernni

vantage a great many more locomo

The Delaware & Hudson has had a
wonderfully successful and prosperous
year, in every respect. It Is a grand
old road, and it Is deserving of all its
great success. It'B men are always
contented and loyal.
