MacGouldrick In St. Petei's Cathedral. At the high mass at St. Petor'n Ca thedtal. cstunlav morning, an elo quent sermon on "Tho Virtue of For giveness," wns prciched liv Rev. D. J, JlicOouldrkK He took his text fiom the eighteenth chapter of MPthew: "Father Forgive Them for They Know not What They do " He took as the main Idea of the pai able tin much-neglected and much mlsundei stood vhtue of the toiglve ness of injuiieh- He cautioned his heart is against the mistake that some make who fancv that the simple woids and pli tmes made use of by our l.oid weie nddte'sul meiely to his heateis In the davs of long ago, applicable directly to those who heard Him and onl Indiieetly or perhaps casually to us Hveiv woid our Lord spoke, every illustiatlon He made use of dining His moital (aieir and Ills coin Lisa tion among men, the rev ei end speake. said, must be leadllv applicable to us and to eveij human being who Mia 11 listen to the stoij of our Loid's life In all time to come as it was to tho obdurate hearts In far-off Judea that would not soften under tho Hoods of glare otn Lmd must have pouted upon them at cverj encounter dining His inoi tnl life But It Is our special happiness rot to be obliged to confine our attentloa to the shifting llguies of a parable, out Irfiid does not Intend to each us bv pai ables The Jews He taught In p-nnbles but to us It is given to know the words of eternal life And when out hnid deslics to teach Ills chlldien how to practice the virtue of tho for giveness of Injuries, lttuo not ni'"-c!y bejond our human powers, but almost bevond tho capacity of human intt'll Pine, He did not recite a paiablo, Ho did not meiely announce n law for ob servance. He pointed to his own lif nnd showed us bv His own conduit the lesson He would have us learn Heie the speaker pointed out the diffeient methods of our Loul's for giveness showing how far our cllvni" model can In Imitated by us and when, our Imitation, though possible. Is not required Our Lord, dining His mortal life gave many proofs of his foiglvcness of thoso who had sought to do Him Injury, but chletllv on the cioss when with n loud voice He ciied to His heiM'nly rather. "Fathei, forgive theni fot they know not what th"v do " Another marvellous Instance of our Lord's forgiveness qf injuries Is the paidon extendi d to thm penitent in the confessional where not morel v as on the cross, and In the oth er Instances of our Lord s life, He with holds thp punishment, and actords Imniiniltv, ind allows the criminat depart, but with tenderness and af fe tion that can belong only to Ills Paeted Heart Immediately that tho words of absolution nio pronounced a Hood of sanctified grace is poured Into the penitent nnd contrite soul, tlvj onerny of Ood has again become His friend Peace nnd joy such as only can come of union with the Prince of Peace ngtln take possession of the tioubled nnd icmotseful heart, nnd a foretaste of heaven, not nn a shadow or suggestion but as a living reality, comes Into the human life eiulekened by the gift that communicates the mer its of the Redemer to the redeemed. In this peculiar manner exercised by out Loul in His sactamental life, the speaker said, we nre not called upon to imitate our I ord for n.s a Catholic poet sweetly said: Only Heaven says ciown'd, not van- fiulshed. When It says forgiven. But In all that our Lord gave ex ample of in His mortal life when for giving Injuries we nro expected, as fan as human fiullty ,1U allow to Imitates Him. Dr. Glffln Occupied tho Foun er's Pulpit In tho Second Presby terian Church In tho Elm Pari: Church Dr. Bobinson Gave a Very Scholarly Discourse, Taking for Text tho Wotds In Acts 20:13, "Minding Himself to Go Afoot." The brotherly spirit pervading th chinches of this city vvus illustrated yesterday when Rev. Di. C 3d. aiflln of Him Park chinch nnd Rev. Dr. C. U Robinson tif the Petond Piusby terlan church exchanged plllnits Dr Robinson ut,icssed a plud&nt thought when he luntniked to friends ut the close of his sermon In the Methodist churifo thnt he lmd been wnltlrg for Dr Olilln's popularity to wain before venturing hefmo that cr.iigrej, ution, but had llnnlly decided that then- was no such possibility Dr. Robinson gave a ciy thounhtful nnd scholarly dlscoutse betote a large eongregntlon from the text found In Acts 20 III, "Minding Himself to go Afoot" The elegant and e'liu fully ehost n diction added giaie to u sul Ject which was Heated with n deep utuleily lng spirituality of standpoint. joirnt: YO FPAUL The theme was based on the joutney of Paul to Macedonia, when the ai ostle had elected to go from Turns to Astos on foot while his companion went bv ea After a dcscilption of that. walk and the beautiful ftntuies to ntliact. the tiaveler's gaze, the speah' l dwelt, upon Paul's evident deslio to In e u tlrelv alone during these few bouu, ' not because ho did not love his fellow j workers not beenusL in- was ei lusive I by nattne but hecaua he needed tho' solitude in wlvich to commune with the vanished jet cvet piesent maatnr regarding the seven j ears' of serv le-ti which were just accomplished. He then diew the paiallel between tint busy life and the hurrying ll.es of today nnd the necessity foi a pjstitn tutlzed method of wlthdiawlng from the world at certain times in older to de velop a true religious life. Just as tho man of aftaiis llnds that he mut have a poiiod of seeluslon from nil inter I uptlous In ordei to plan necessfully the niiiltltudious details of his business so must the person who would make a success of his spiritual existence, spend some moments alone with God. WOULD AVAIL LITTLU. It would avail little to mil-o a gteat painter of the man who metely thought to go and sit in the little room where MUhnel Angclo wrought. It would not make a poet of the man who thought to lmltnto Dante by dreaming at the stme window where ho looked out up on Oi otto's Tower and a deep spirit uality t ould not be produced by medi tating in that cell of "an Marco where Savonatola piayed. The simple withdrawing from the throng will noL avail to quicken the religious life One must love that aloofness not from selfish teasnns, not to avoid helng troubled as was the Levite who passpcl by on the other side but because of the levo for Christ and the longing for communion with lllm alone. In conilusion Dr. Robinson lepeatcd stanzas op a beautiful poem "The Othei Side." REV. O. H. E. RANCH SPOKE. He Occupied the Pulpit of the Cal vaiy Refoimed Church. Rev. O II V.. BELL HAS LEFT HIS FLOCK SAYS THEY NEVER SUPPORTED HIM PROPERLY. Tendered His Resignation in Juno but Withdrew It nt tho Request of His Congregation Recently There Was Trouble Over an En tertainment Conducted by tho "Willing Workois" nnd Mr. Bell Again Presented His Resignation nnd Had It AcceptedWill Do Missionniy Work. There Is trouble lu the Shlloh (col ored) Baptist chill eh. It Is as a ho't'e divided aalns' It self. The church was organized nhotit three yeais ago by Rev. Mr. Irwin. It continued with varying icsults un til March, 1S9S, when Rov. J. H. Hell took charge of It. He Is an Indefatigable worker nnd under his guidance the church flour Irhed. A largo llbiary was built up, a Sunday school which now numbeis thiity-slx was organized, and over $400 was raised for church expenses. Last Thursdny night a meeting was held by ten members ot the church and his resignation accepted. Tills was somewhat In the nature of a surprise, as the resignation was one handed In last June, but withdrawn on the earnest solicitation of his Hock Ho preached his faiewell sermon yestet day morning Rev. Mr. Hell charges members of tho organization who have banded ti gether under the name of the "Willing Workois" with nilsappioprlatlng the money lalsed by church entertain ments. In his contract a clause speci fies that any monev raised In such a mnnnei should be eeiuallv divided h' twoen the church and pastor. It seems that at an entertainment given bj the "Willing Workers," after the expenses were paid $23 71 remained, which the willing ones, paradoxical as It may seem, wore unwilling to give up. SECURED THE MONEY. Rev. Hell, nevertheless, seem 1 the money fiom them, took h's own half and gave die lest to Tieasuier Meiry weather fir the chinch. The latter took the money, pal 1 some bills with It and used It Judiciously. The lie of the "Willing Workers" was aroused, however, and hence the enmity nnd trouble for the pastor. Rov. Bell spoke of their insubordin ation and says that they held several meetings without his cognizance. Rev. Hell, when seen at his home last night, seemed pained and sor row ful that he should be so used by the people he had elone so much for. Ho seems, however, thoroughly out of patience with them and declares he will have nothing more to do with them, as thej have never properly supported him or kept up their end of the contract In the proper manner. Ho said there are many good people In tho congregation, and mentioned the tiensurer, Mr. Merry weather and James A. Wilson, the leader of the Young People's union, as earnest w orkers With the better poitlon of the con gregation Rev. Hell will start a mis sion not Sunday at Hulbert hall, H27 Wyoming avenue, and will do legulai mlsslonaiy woik. A portion of the congregation ai- all In favor of Rev Hell and say that his unpopularity Is wholly because of the rigid discipline he enforces. Rev. Bell Is one of the best known colored Baptist ministers In the st m He was cducnted In Roger Williams Institute, Nashville. Telin., and was ordained Mav 11. 1871.
