As to May Irwin,
May Irwin says she does not think
much of women who want to do men's
work. She believes thoroughly In mar
iluge, In the husband controlling tho
wife, and In all the good old-fashioned
Ideas. Hut she admits, howevet, wl'li
n smile, that she does not know who
or w here the man is w ho could govern
Jier
Miss Irwin thinks that woman's
greatest weapon is her talent for sai
rasm In her own case this gift hn
served her better than a regiment of
big brothers. In all her years of stag"
experience she has been before tho
public since her childhood she has
never received a letter from nn un
known ndmlior This Is nn everj
day experience with the most success
ful actresses
Hogging letters she gets by tho bun
dled, but her lepututlon for icady wit
protects her from the recorded tender
ness of those who aie charmed by her
amiability Miss Irwin detlatcs that
she admires people who can net, but
that she heiself Is no nctiess. Sh?
can play only one side of herself tho
merry one.
That she has another, an earnest
one, haully Is suspected. Hut theie
are two sons, her enthusiasms, to be
brought up, besides her dear delightful
mother, and one of the loveliest homes
In New York to look after nnd plan for.
She keeps these serious matters to her
self And so the world laughs with ho
with her and "Sister Mary "
Perhaps May Irwin's big henrtedness
Is the most remaikable thing about
her. She likes to tnlk about the suc
cess of othei s players In the company
nnd of what nice people they nie, too.
There are few giand opera alls about
this star.
