THE MARKETS.
Vnll Street Kevlew.
N'cw York, Aug-. 124. The demand
for securities mostly expended itself
In the early tradlnp today nnil tli"
weight of realizing sales became more
burdensome nnd at the last made tho
general tendem y downwards, although
the marking- up of a few stofks nt the
close to top prices made It irr.'gular.
Northern Pacific and the Union Pacific
stocks rose to top prices In the final
dealings. There were finite n number
or rather obscure stocks which held
gnod gains throughout, but tho earlier
rise In many cases was almost wiped
out. The market started off well un
der the inlluencp of the cheerful lone
of foreign markets. An early drive
against Tennessee Coal, which .trned
It down four points caused a mnment
nrv halt, especially In the specialties.
Yesterday's strong upward movonvnt
In tobacco was resumed carrying tint
stock to lSl'i, and cnuMng sympathet
ic gains of between 1 to 'J points In
other leading specialties. Th?re was a.
large demand for Union l'aelUc,
Northern Paclllc and Haltlmore nnd'
Ohio which lifted those stocks about
n point each. There was good buying
of St. Paul, which advanced that
stock an extreme !4 but the other
prominent f! rangers did not respond.
When it became known after noon Unit
the directors of the Continental To
bacco company had lulled to declare a.
dividend as ninny speculators hurt
hoped they would, there was a drop In
the tobacco li-uiw which reached J
in American tobacco. Pustar. llrooklyn
Traniit ami Manhattan responded In
sympathy and a number of railroads
lost a point. The market drifted rath
er uncertainly for the rest of tile day
except for some Miength In individual
stock?. The induction of th dividend
rate In Consolidated Gns, although It
h'wl bom fully expected, had a bad
effect on tho market. The stoW; Itself
Iluctuatod feverishly over three points
end closed at a fractional loss. Total
Kilos 0M.700.
The bond market was unite active
nnd :i number of speculative Issues
f bowed advances. Total sales par
ilue $3,'.'yC),0fi i. U. ri. old is. registered
