The affair, however, reached a climax at the above-mentioned place, much to the Joy of all on hoard and to the sor row of the disturbers. After the car had left the city line the conductor de manded another fare of them. After much trouble he succeeded In collect ' Ing the fare and went on about his duties, collecting the rest of the fares. "When he returned to the rear of the car where these men were seated, they claimed they had each given him a dime. Conductor Capwell explained to them that they had only given him a nickel. When Feltz patch was reached, Con ductor Capwell Jumped off the car at the switch to throw on the signal light for the inbound oar. At the same time these men alighted and, before any one was aware, pounced upon the conduc tor, but he was ablo to care for him self In a manner that caused surprise to his assailants. The conductor dealt each a solar jilexus blow, nnd when the car pulled out of the switch the unconscious drunks lay by the wayside. The con ductor was unharmed. Conductor Capwell Is of short stat ure, but is possessed of proper grit. ENJOYED A TROLLEY RIDE. The members of St. Cecilia's Total Abstinence society enjoyed a trolley ride last evening over the various lines throughout the city. Previous to their departure a social was held In the par lors of St. Leo's battalion rooms on North Main avenue. The funeral of Joseph Crossln, who died at tho Lackawanna hospital from Injuries received by being run down by a Lackawanna train, was held this af ternoon. A short service wns conducted at the home on Price street, after which the funeral cortege proceeded to the Polish church In Providence, where another service was hold. A large number of friends were In attendance, Burial was made In the German Catholic cemetery. GENERAL NEWS NOTES. The Republican league of this side, whose rooms are located over Davles' drug store, has disbanded. The decis ion was reached on Saturday evening. Joseph Ansley, Jr., who has been Identified with his aged father, Jo seph Ansley, sr in the lumber busi ness for a number of years, returned home on Monday from an extended trip through the west. Mr. Ansley was favorably Impressed with his trip and In a short while will move to Alamo gordo, New Mexico. FIRE AT CHINCHILLA. Large Barn with Valuable Contents Totally Destroyed. A large barn at Chinchilla, owned by the Providence Gas and Water com pany and leased bv John Spruks. was totally destroyed by lire yesterday af ternoon. Among the contents of the barn, nil of which were destroyed, were 300 bushels of oats, put In only the day before; twenty tons of hay, half of it new; a big bin of potatoes. 1,000 new tomnto baskets, a cutter, two bob sleds nnd a lot of hnrness. The price of meat In this city is now higher than at any time since the Chicago riots, and restaurant keepers say they will be obliged to raise menu-card prices. The advance Is of about S per cent, for all cuts. No butcher can supply meat at the same price he did two weeks ago and continue In business. It Is probable that the Hotelkeeners' association, on the strength of the wholesalers' ad vance, will hold u meeting to raise prices of fare. GORED BY A VICIOUS BULL. Animal Had to Be Driven from Victim with Pitchforks. Harrlsburg, Pa., Aug. 15. Joseph Snyder, a wealthy farmer of Jackson township, Dauphin county, was terri bly gored by a vicious bull yesterday, while he was. turning the animal Into the pasture field. The bull knocked him down, then tossed him, nnd would have killed him had not Mr. Snyder's wife and daughter ran to the rescue with pitchforks and drove the bull awav.
