THE MARKETS.
Wall Street Review,
New Yoik, Aug. 14. Tho stock mar
ket started off with something of nn
upward rush, stock exchange traders
and u small outside following had ap
parently come to tho conclusion that
Saturday's bank statement Indicated
that nil vexed problems In the money
market had been settled and that case
and abundance of funds were now nt
hand. The first sharp ndvnnce In
stocks, however, demonsttatecl that the
pleasure of some heavy selling would
have to bo encountered on nny general
upward movement. The market there
after lapsed Into the spotty condition
which has been Its recent characteris
tic. A small number of stocks showed
cry nun ked strength, but tho usually
actlxc and prominent stocks lay prac
tically dormant throughout the session
and showed u sagging tendency which
the strength In speclul Instances had
no effect toward counteracting. Ten
nessu Coal and Iron advanced by sen
sational leaps an extieme 0 points,
giving color to prevalent tumors of a
corner In the stock. The tone was fev
erish below the hljjh level and the net
gain was S?i. Tho nunounuement of
the settlement of the smelters' strike
In Colorado enhanced the prices of
ciulto a number ot stocks, Including
American Smelting, which Is most dl
loctly affected, Coloiado Fuel, Denver
and Rio Giandp stocks and Colorado
Southern stocks Gains in the group
lauged from 1'4 In Denver nnel Rio
Grande to BU In Colorado Fuel pie
feirod, The smelting stocks lose 6
and iYt, respectively The railroad
stocks to show at length were com
puiatlvely few. The Chicago Great
Wi stern debentures starte'd downward
after their notable rise on Saturday
and nte nearl 2 points off on the day,
but the piefeired A stock Is up over 2
points and the preferred n stock over
a point. Resides these there ure not
able gains In the Pittsburg, Cincinnati,
Chicago and St. Louis stocks, Louis
ville, Kansas and Texas preferred, the
Minneapolis, St. Paul, Sault Ste Marie
stocks, Cleveland, Lorain nnd Wheel
ing pref cried, New York, Chicago and
St. Louis stocks and some of the low
priced railroad stocks, Confidence
over the money situation had a relapse,
the conviction glowing that the Satur
day bank statement may not be a fnlr
rcllectlon of Saturday's condition In
ihp market. Uneasiness and elepres
slon were ulso reflected from abroad,
political disquiet In France nnd al
anclng money In London and Ueilln
Ihientenlng some pressuie of Hciulda
tlon lrom these quarters should this
countrj's credits be called home.
Whatever ease Is manifest In the
money market Is realized to be due
to the quietude of speculative mai
kets the wot Id over and conservative
heads In the financial world are In
clined to frown upon an outbreak of
speculation. Tho closing of the mar
ket was active, but extremely li regu
lar. People s Gas mounted above 122
on the announcement of the acquisition
ol the Pullman Gas company, while
othei stocks tended downwards. Net
changes aie mixed. Total sales, 147,
200. The bond market showed increased
activity, Kansas and Texas second
leading. Pi Ices aie higher. Total
sales par alue. $2,581,000. United
States 3s and new .4s ndvanced U nnd
the old 4s reglsteied and the Ss H in
the bid pi Ice.
