THE MARKETS.
Wall Street Review.
Dy Associated Press.
New York, July 19. The Intense dull
ness of the stock market continued to
be the main feature of the trading to
day, us for Borne time paBt. Not only
was It truo of tho New York market,
but of the Continental and London
niaikcts as well, nnd speculation tit
different exchanges In tho United
Stntes was reported In the same dull
nnd neglected condition. Tho whole
speculative world maintained Its wait
ing attitude. Muny factorswhlch have
havo adduced to account for tho hesi
tation have been successfully elimin
ated and the hesitation still peislsts.
The bears took tho samo heart of graco
f i om this continued disinclination to
ndvance and made n vigorous attack
on the New York matket late todiy.
JJaillor galnr. In some of tho special
ties wcjo wiped out, notably In tho
tobacco storks, In sugar and In steel
und wire and the whole market drop
ped to the low level of the day. Mis
souri Pacific nnd Wabash preferred
led the decline, tho latter with a net
loss of Vs. The grangers nil weaken
ed shatply nnd Atchlnron preferred
was notably heavy In tone. Brooklyn
Transit lost the greater part of ypter
dny'c gain and Manhattan dropped a
point below last night. Metropolitan
Stteet railway, on the contraty, te
slsted the declining tendency and
closed unchanged. Federal steel com
mon fell away heavily 2 points In tho
lute ttadlng, although tho public an
nouncement that the Judicial Injunc
tion ngattiHt tho distribution of the div
idend declared on the stock had been
continued, was not made until after
tho market's close.
Now Yoik Air Brake made a metcoilo
display on yesterday's Judicial de
cision affirming the validity of one of
its patents. The stock opened up 17
points and then fell twenty points and
closed with a net decline of 1 point
The close was tit 200 bid and 220 asked.
The market enjoyed a period of some
sttcngth eatly In tho day, but tians
nctlons were on such n small scale as
to lend little significance to tho move
ment of pikes. Money continued to
work lather low, but Is still above
rates nt other domestic centies. Fear
of tho gold movement sceins to cxer
c!s.e a icllex Influence between Lon
don and New Yoik. New York Is In
tear that the money stringency In Lon
don and on tho continent will draw
gold ftom heie, as our rates work low
er. London Is In fear that tho coming
epoit movement of merchandise from
the United States will emphasize tho
stringency abroad nnd so prolong tho
stagnation of speculation The conse
quence Is n waiting attitude at all
points. Total sales, 261,500.
Bonds were Intensely dull and prices
moved sluggish in both directions. To
tal sales par value, $1,861,000.
United .States 3s coupon advanced V,
and tho old 4s reglsteted and tho new
4s ditto U In the bid price.
By Carrlngton & Cusack
New Yoik, July 19. Tho maiket
opentd fairly strong with tho excep
tion of the traction stocks, which sold
off on news of the strike on Metropoli
tan road, but as the day went on re
ports of only 10 per cent, of tho men
having btiuck caused lenewed confi
dence and prices tallied to almost last
night's close.
Now York Air Brake was again a
featuio of the market, opening up 17
points on the handing dow n by the
couit of a decision In their favor, but
the pace was too hot and realizing sales
caused the stock to drop 20 points.
Brooklyn Hapld Ttanstt people keep
repoitlng strike practically a failure,
but they show e Ident fatigue In main
taining the price of the stock.
The men appear to be very earnest
In their efforts and the action of tho
board of aldermen In New York in
otlng their sympathy would look as
though they thought the men had a
Just giievance.
American Tobacco showed great
strength and scored an advance for
the day.
On cannot go wrong on bujlng this
stock on all declines. In the past pear
this stock has shown wonderful earn
ing power and It Is likely we will again
see this stock far above the par mntk.
Dealings throughout the day have
been small and stocks that hao main
tained, prices have been well support
ed and showed great strength.
Tho maiket closed very Irtegular and
weak.
Wheat was again weak today and
made a new low maik, but we feel
sure that purchases at these prices will
yield handsome profits.
