als of Saturday nnd Sunday John
Mooro Shoots u Catamont.
A new silk mill Is now safely In sight,
as word has just buen received from
tho Sterling company of Paterson, by
tho bonrd of trade, that their efforts In
procuring n site had been appreciated
nnd accepted. It will be rememborod
by readers of Tho Tribune that negotla
tlons had been entertained by the
board with the Sterling company, the
latter proposing to erect a building nt
n cost of $30,000, and give employment
to between two nnd thirce hundred;
hnnds. The alto selected was tlie prop
erty of tho Pennsylvania Coal com
pany and Its valuation fMO, about half
Its value This nmount was generously
donated by ex-Mayor Maloney, and at
n meeting of the board of trade to
bo held this evening the necessary
papers will be signed and tho transfer
made to the, Sterling company. Tho
agreement is that the building will be
completed and In operation within a
year after tho signing of the articles.
The purchase of tho Water street
bridge nnd n belt line Inaugurated be
tween this city and 'Wllkes-Cnrrp, Is
among the possibilities. Tho new com
pany which succeeds the- Wyoming
Valley Trartlon company, will double
track the road between hero and Nan
tlcoke, nnd with tho connecting link
completed between Duryca nnd Itend
ham, the trolley cars will be bowling
along between Nantlcoke and Scranton
at passenger train speed, and the old
Scranton branch will become only use
ful for local business lictwcon this
city and Mooslc.
The funeral of Joseph Motlska, fath
er of Alderman Motlska, whose death
took place on Thursday from the effects
of Injuries received by being run down
by a trolloy car In Duryen, occurred on
Saturday morning.
The late John Greer, of Mooslc, who
was Interred in the Marcy cemetery

ganize th Scranton lire department,
and also the first chief of police of that
city.
Charles Thatcher, who Is an employe
In the store of Terwllllger, on North
Main street, fell from a ladder on Sat
urday and fractured his arm.
The young child of John J. Padden,
of Carroll street, was Interred yester
day. John Moore, who has one of the best
regulated farms In Pittston township,
has for some time been a severe suf
ferer in the depopulation of the tenants
In his poultry yard. His suspicions
were rewarded yesterday morning,
when ho discovered a large specimen
of the cat family, known as a cata
mount, stealthily creeping towards tho
hennery from the thicket close by, and
seizing his trusty rllle, that several
generations ago did valiant service
with himself at Gettysburg, ho shot tho
animal. Tomorrow the hide will adorn
the gable end of his barn. John Is a
dead-shot yet, and the balance of his
feathered family can now roost con
tented. The funeral of the late Lewis Gor
don, tho victim of the drowning acci
dent on Thursday, occurred on Satur
day morning from tho residence on Ex
eter street. Rev. Hnrshane conducted
the service. The attendance was large,
as tho deceased was well and favorably
known, bavins: been In business hero
for many years as a printer. Tho In
terment took place In the West Pitts
ton cemetery.
A memorial service was held last
evening in the Kast Side Presbyterian
church in honor, nnd in memory of tho
late Mayor Harding. Tho Rov. J. J.
K. "ietcher delivered the address and
it was a fitting eulogy to one who In
life was an honored citizen, a faithful
public officer, and one who commanded
the highest respect ft all that goes to
make good citizenship. The music by
tho choir was especially arranged for
this solemn occasion, nnd many of ou
city officials were Included In the large
congregation present.
Ray- Eosvrth, of tho Wllkes-Barre
Times, was taken suddenly III on Satur
day. Rev. John M. Johnston, lately of
Wyoming and Idaho, yesterday took
charge of S.t. James" Episcopal church
on Water street. Ho tnkes the place of
Rev. John Hurras, who has hewn sent
to the Pittsburg parish.
It took live citizens to hand an ob

THE MARKETS.
"Wall Street Itovlow.
By Associated Press.
New York, July 15. Today's short
market was so narrow and so nearly
stagnant that movements of prices
wero of llttlo significance. There was
a perceptible tone of firmness, how
ever, which was emphasized after tho
appearance of the bank statement by
tho hasty covering of some small bear
contracts on the grangers which bad
boon put out just previous to tho ap
pearance of the statement. Probably
the greater part of the day's business
was given over to tho closing out
short contracts by tho bears. This con
tingent has been particularly active
on Rrooklyn Transit during tho past
week on tho persistent talk of a strike.
Their buying to cover today made thnt
stock the most active on the list nnd
moved It up two points from the open
ing decline. Sugar was latgely dealt
In nnd rose at one ttmo over 2 points
from tho lowest. People's Gns recov
ered sharply from yesterday's price.
Oregon Navigation preferred advanced
1 on the discharge of the voting trust
and tho Implied guarantee of preferred
dividends to the amount of 10 per cent.
In yearly Installments. Cotton oil rose
over a point. Manhattan and south
western railways were also In tho Item
of loan contractions and the conse
quent reduction In deposit liabilities.
13y Cnrrlngton & Cusack.
New York, July 15. The stock mar
ket opened nt about last night's clos
ing prices, London coming In at about
same as New York close.
The bank statement today seemed to
be a question of doubt, some predic
tions being for a good one, while oth
ers were of n doubtful character.
The grangers and traction stocks
wero the most active. The grangers
being strong on continued good crop
news, nnd while there Is a small win
ter wheat crop In the spring weat
states, there Is little doubt of a large
crop. Grangers stocks should be good
purchases, both for investment and
speculation, us they aro assured of
good earnings,
Manhattan Is being bulled on the
saving expected from the new electri
city power, but It should be remem
bered that they have $18,000,000 more
stock on which to pay dividends and
with their back taxes and damage
judgments hanging over them tho stock
looks to us as though It was selling
far beyond Its level.
The steel stocks are active and
strong on buying by people who ap
preciate that the continued high prlcea
of Iron will yield large profits to their
values, still their earning power Is so
great that It Is likely In tho course of
the year they will be able to pay large
dividends on their common stocks.
Federal Steel seems to us to be par
ticularly a good purchase, as that com
pany owns Its own mines, transporta
tion lines and factories, so that they
realize every prollt on the ore from
its bed In tho earth to the finished pro
duct. Market showed great strength after
announcement of the bank statement
and closed at the highest prices of the
day.
