The stock mar ket strikingly demonstrated its inher ent strength nguln today with n prac tical recovery over yesterday's losses. Closing prices today were only slightly below those of Saturday and in some exceptional cases scarcely above. Tho. only conditions In which any change hnd taken place were purely technical. These were the elimination ot a weakly margined long account and the crea tion of a, short Interest. London began to sell stocks in New York at the open ing today as It did yesterday but in stead of coming upon a largo account of nearly exhausted margins, as va3 the case yesterday the opening decline Invited buying to cover tho short con tracts put out yesterday. The buying1 from this source Afforded tho principal support to the market In the early deal ings. It wns particularly marked in sugar nnd tho Now York Traction and gas stocks, which suffered most severe ly from benr raiding yesterday. By the time the short Interest hart been covered the market came to a stand still, the bulls apparently lacking cour age to push their advantage in facQ of tho continued stiffness of the money market, which held quite firmly nbout the legal rate- for call money. Slight ly before noon, however, a determined buying movement developed in the great trunk lines, nnd with occasional intervals of dullness, continued for the rest of the dny, spreading from one group to another until it embraced, practically the whole list. The agree ment among the trunk lines to restore rates on grain to the seaboard was ap parently the basis of the origin of the movement. St. Taul's Increase in gross enrnings for tho first week of July, $:oi,S22, prompted tho buying of the Grangers. The high rate for call money was ignored and very large amounts loaned on the stock exchange nt C per cent. The rate eased off to 4li per cent, at one time, but rose again to 6 per cent., the demand ap parently continuing large for the in creased supply available. Interior ex changes continued to run against New York, but yesterday's contraction of loans had apparently left the New York banks In an easier position. Demand sterling in Now York only held firm under the stress of the high money rate in London, but sterling exchango in Paris nnd Berlin advanced sharply and discounts were easier at those cen tres. Long sterling in New York weak ened an additional fraotlon under the sales of futures based on the expected outward movement of merchandise to begin in a short time. Among the special points of strength in the late stock market were Texas and Pacific, which rose to 23 and later tho whole southwestern group. Wall street had a rumor of a contemplated merger of Wabash and Missouri Pacific to ac count for the strength of those stocks, Northern Pacific also scored a brilliant advance, recovering more than its divi dend which was taken off today. There was a simultaneous advance in Tennessee Coal, Colorado Fuel and American Steel nnd Wire, whlse rose from 2 to 2i and also In Chesapeake and Ohio, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chi cago nnd St, Louis and Lake Krlo and Western preferred. After a fractional reaction on professional profit taking prices were marked up again to near the best In the closing dealings. Total sales, 393.33S shares. Bonds rallied somewhat from the early weakness in sympathy with stocks, but were gen erally light. Total sales, par value. 52.OSO.00C. The market opened Irregular nnd fractionally low er, but recovering in tho first few min utes advanced prices. Tho Grangers nnd Atchison preferred were ths strongest, being favorably nft'ected by tho government crop report. Tho Itrnctlon stocks after a weak opening; subsequently milled with the exception nf Brooklyn Itapld Transit which wai heavy throughout the day. Money eased considerably after the opening dealings, lurgo amounts being offered nt G per cent, nnd lower, which caused covering by tho Traders. Commission house buying developed during tho mid die of tho day, causing a sharp ad vance nil nlong the Hue. A good deal of the eatly strength was undoubtedly due to the covering of short contracts, but thoro was some buying by the prominent bull Interests. London sold a few stocks In tho early morning, but subsequently turned buy ers on the improvement here. It seems to be pretty well understood that the closeness in money is about over for the time being and that the bank statements from now on will make a more favorable showing. Unless we harvo further agitation from the South African trouble we see nothing to hold the market down at tho moment. It must be remembered, however, that tho situation in the Transvaal Is somewhat ncute and that the foreign markets may bo unfavorably affected over night, consequently we do not believe in largo commitments at tho moment and thtnlon fair profits long stocks should be closed out. The close was at some slight recession from the best prices of the day. Quotations furnished by CAnRINGTON & CUSACK. stock nnd bond brokers, rooms 410 and Connell building, Scranton, Pa.
