A FEATHERED WONDER. Prom the London Dally. Possibly the rarest of nil feathered creatures Is tho "takahe" bird of New Zealand. Science names It Notornls Mantelll. The first one ever seen by white eyes was caught In 1S49. A sec ond camp to white hands in 1SS1. Like tho first. It was tracked over snow and caught with dogs, fighting stoutly and uttering piercing screams of rage until overmastered. Both became tho prop erly of the British Museum. After that It was not seen again until 1S79. That year's specimen went In the Dresden Museum, at the cost of $300. The fourth which was captured last fall in the fiords of Lake Anau, in New Zealand, has been offered to tho gov ernment there for tho tldv sum of $1,250. Thus It appears that the bird is precious; worth very much more than its weight In gold. The value, of course, comes of rarltv. The wise men were l:?glnnlng to -set It down as extinct. Scarcity aside, it must be worth looking at a gorgeous creature about the size of n big goose, with breast, head and neck of the richest dark blue, growing dullish as it reaches the under parts. Back, wings and tail feathers are ollvo green, and the plumage throughout has a metallls luster. The tall Is very short, and has underneath it a thick patch of soft pure white feathers. Having wings, the takahe llles not. The wings nre not rudimentary, but the Mrrt makes no attempt to use them. Tin' legs are longlsh and very stout, tho feet not webbed, and furnished with sharp, powerful claws. The oddest fea ture of all Is the bill, an equilateral triangle of hard pink horn. Along tho edge, where it Joins the head, there Is a strip of soft tissue much like the rudimentary comb of a barnyard fowl. Sale of the arc just a few of the many the public iu order to make uow being manufactured. Shirts. All the $1.23 quality shirts at 73 cents. Special lot of colored bos-onid at 50 cents--. The continued tightness in thu money market precipi tated liquidation of tipcculattvo ac counts today which resulted In losses In value ranging from $1 to $3 a sharo In all the principal active stoclts trad ed In. Heavy selling for Loudon ca count marked tho opening on the ex changed and nn the day progressed tho successive calling of loans result ed in tho marking up of tho rate for call loans to 7 par cent. This rate forced ninny speculators on tho long sldo to close out. TliiU'o were spcciul points of weakness besides in ono or two prominent stocks of which the bears were quick to tako advantage and which were a potent Influence In the gonernt sentiment favoring a de cline. Total sales, 514,700, Bonds gen erally were weak. Total sales, $2,757, 000. United States 3s registered advanc ed Va ond tho old 4s declined V In tho bid price. By Carrlngton & Cusack. Xcw York. July 10. Tho opening was weak all throughout the list on the lower London market and the expec tation of dearer money here. Declines were general and in some cases quite pronounced. Selling came in from traders nt the start, hut was followed by some com mission house liquidation. After the llrst few minutes, supporting orders rallied the list, which subsequently sold off again on renewed selling. Sentiment seems to bo decidedly mixed. People Gas was quite heavily sold by Chicago houses on talk of a gas war in that city. The news with tho exception o the South African disturbance which ef fected tho foreign markets, was on the whole bullish. Spring wheat conditions have) im proved and there seems a chance that the state will have more than an aver age crop. L. & N. was fairly strong on story that the preliminary statement to bo Issued today will show earnings of about five per cent on the stock. While the dividend Is uncertain there seems a possibility of an increase. Metropolitan was unfavorably altect ed by the news that the Knights of Labor would make an organized de mand on tho management for the cor rection of the grievances complained of by the employes. Master Workman Parson announced that unless President Vreeland would meet the demands of the men that n strike Is more than probable. Should It come, It will have a dis turbing affect on the whole market and today sympathetically caused weakness in B. R. T. notwithstanding Mr. Parsons assertion that the com pany and the employes nro in perfect harmony. The truth of tho matter is that the market has been over-bought and the public demand is not as great as tho leaders expected. This, with tho com parative closeness of money and the unfavorable statement of Saturday, caused quite free liquidation through out the list. The market Is a purchase of any further weakness, unless any special news 5-hould develope of an unfavorable character. The close was somewhat Irregular but at a slight recovery from the low prices of the day and with a distin guish better feeling In the market than at opening.
