Hie right of AV. H Thomas to the olllce

this city.
Mi Thomas was lrpirsentcd by
Attorney John It. Kdwaids, who said
the application was made under the
provisions of the Vaugh.in act with
inference to election contests which
was p.issed bv the last legislatuie. lie
t-dld the iiucstion at lsue was whethei
i not the act applied to contests in
progiess at the time the act became
a law, as was the ie with the con
UM undei discussion.
All of the authoiitles. he contended,
agree that the law at the time a case
is terminated Is tho one that governs
tho disposition of the costs That
heing so, he felt that they hae a
light to ask the court to compel Con
testant Walsh to file a bond as secur
ity for tho payment of the costs if
thoj hhall be adjudged against him
' If you. make such an order this con
test will chop," said Mr. Edwnids in
conclusion.
Attornej I). J. Reedy, who appealed
foi Mr. Walsh, contended that the com t
at this time cannot require them to
give a bond, tt is now too late, If
the Vaughan bill governs the costs In
this case the fact will not bo known
until the contest ends and according to
Mr. Iteed's view, tho question of tha
disposition of the costs has nothing
to do with the matter of a bond any
way. The disposition of this case will he
watched with a good deal of interest,
ns it is piobable the court will give
home intimation of what It thinks about
the proposition that the Vaughan bill
governs the costs in pending contests
If It does the gentlemen who signed
the I-angstaif contest petition will have
to pay the monumental hill of cosu in
that case.
Want More Time.
Attorney M. H. McDonald of tho
counsel for County Trcilsuier M. J.

by W R I.angstaff.jesterday afternoon
asked the court for an extension of
time. Attorney II. 11. Ilolgate, who
leprcsents Mr. Lingstnff, was not pre

the request in his absence
Mi. McDonald f-ald he had served
notice on Mr. Ilolgate that he would

We Cannot Get Away from the Cotton Subject
Here are some of Whytlaw's Celebrated Scotch Piques, in fancy stripes and plaids,
of the very finest and best grade made and regularly sold for 50 cents a yard.
Choose from them at i2jc a yard.
Silk Waists
Odd lots of prettiest kinds cheap. When the maker offered to close out the re
niainder of his stock we named our price and secured the goods. You may judge
of the styles when we tell you that never did prettier ones ever grace even our
counters. Choice of 100 waists $5 each. Value from $6.50 to $10.
Waist Silks by the Yard at Tempting Prices
The mere reduction in figures is attractive and properly so, But it's not alone tho
prices that count. The silks we offer are neither common nor limited. Hundreds
of yards remarkable aside from their cheapness. This is part of a sweeping
clearance effort. It was many years ago that we ceased to cuddle our summer
stocks through winter. These are silks of spring and summer, 1899. Not one
yard shall be sold in the spring and summer of 1900. And this is why : All 75c
and 85c silks, 50c. All 90c and $1 Silks, 65c. All $1.10 and $1.25 silks,
75c. All $1.35 and $1.50 silks, 95c. All $1.65 and $1.75 silks. $1.25.
The offering is large and varied and comprises many of the best things shown
this season. An especially strong line of Corded Taffetas being in the lot in tho
correct colorings.
