Scranton's baso balllsts somewhnt re
deemed themselves yesterday by shut
tins out Newark. Brown, Scranton's
ono-tlmo pitcher, who was wont to take
vacations without leave, did the twirl
ing for the visitors. He was not In
Hodson's class yesterday. The latter
was In excellent form.
Reading refused to play nt Wilkes
Burre and the game was given to the
Damns by u scoto of 9 to 0. They were
In the lead and would undoubtedly
have won even If Heading had con
tinued to play. Wilkes-Barre has lost
Manager Shannon, who goes to Buf
falo. It remains to be seen whether or
not this will nffect the club to a seri
ous degree.
A number of icltlng games were
played in the National league.

Where They Play Today.
Newark at Scranton.
Reading at Wllkes-Barriv
Allentown at Richmond
I'.itcrson at Lancaster.
NEWARK WAS SHUT OUT.
Hodson's Good Work and Scranton's
Sharp Fielding Won the Game.
Berger's Umpliing Was
Not Satisfactory.
Only two hundred persons were
picscnt to witness the shut out of
Newark by Scranton at Athletic park
yesterday afternoon.
It was a great game.
ilodson twirled for Scranton, and did
It well, too. Biown, a fotmer Seran
ton pitcher, was In the box for New
nik and was pounded lather hard at
times.
Theie were several changes in Scran
ton's batting order. Doherty led off,
followed by Knoll, Lippert took Doh
erty's place at fifth position. Rlsley
was on second, as O'Connell Is suffer
ing from an injured linger. O'Neill
was out of the game, owing to a sore
hand and lame leg. He was never
Ki own to hao such hard luck.
Flunagan, an amateur from Jormjn,
was behind the plate. He plajed n
fnhly good game. He will be given
every chance possible foi a position.
.Mien, who was expected to pitch, Is
laid up with a seveio toothache
Newark contains many old-time
Scranton nun. Gunson, an old i.itch
r, end Blown, the pitcher, are among
theiii. Umplie Berger was also an
old-tlmo catcher for Scianton, but his
decisions didn't show him an old Scran
ton man by any means.
The game started at 4 p. m. with
Boherty at bat. He got his base on
balls, but was thiown out at second
by Gunson. The next three men up
died to the tune of one, two, three. In
the second Llppeit fouled out; Rls
ley and McMnhon struck out.
Newark was never dangerous, except
In the fifth, when Cogan nearly
leached third with no one out. Cogan
was out at second by good rights, but
Berger didn't think so Gunson came
up and lined one to MeMahon, who
threw Cogan out at third.
Cogan wus the llrst and only man to
get his base on balls off Ilodson. From
theie on until the eighth they never
saw fli.st. In this inning Kloff made
n single, but died on It; hu never
leached second. In the ninth another
single was made by Wcddlge; he also
died on the thst bag. It was hard
woik for them to even get a look at
the bag.
Scranton's Hist tun was mado In the
third. Ilodson surpilsed everybody.
He made a two-base hit, and later
came In on Knoll's two-bagger. Knoll
was thiown out at third by Brown,
ranking three gone.
In the fouith we never saw first. In
the fifth Brown lost his nerve and
Scianton lined out some good ones, 1:
wa very gingery indeed. Rigley came
to bat but flew out to Weddlge.
MeMahon got his base on balls and
went to second on Flanagan's single
nnd later scored on a single made by
Ilodson. Flanagan worked nround the
bases and scoied on Knoll's hit. Hod
son did the same, and scored on Dil
lon's single, and Doherty came In on
Eogan's fly to light Held. In the sixth
we scored two moie, malting our total
seven runs to Newurk's shut out. It
was a great game, mixed with lots of
kicking and excitement. The scorn:

to the presence of a circus In town tlui

Tho bears mado somo further progicss
in foielng prices to n. lower level today
but they were by no means In so ag

of short contracts during tho course of
the day and last prices vvero materially
above tho lowest even In those stocks
which show tho heaviest not losses. Tho
beats met determined resistance In soma
of tho stocks which have hitherto proved
most vulnerable to their attack. Tho lat
ter part of tho day showed a distinctly
imptovrd tono and mi upward tendency
of prices with no disposition apparent
fioin tho bear faction to make further
(ventures for the present. After tho
opening dip in prices there was tha
usual professional overlng designed to
meet tho orders of outside operatois. The
result whs short lived and bear party
then made demonstration In force. They
brought out heavy liquidation In the To
baeco stocks, Westt rn Union, Metropol
ltnn Street Railway, Manhattan nnd
BrookiMi Transit and extended their op
erations In hplto of tho weakness In tho
wheat market to tho Grangers. Total
tabs, 013,700 shales.
Thero was an ensy tone In tho bond
market In sjmpathy with tho stock, but
losses were not so conspicuous as In
stocks. Total sales, par value, $1,810,000.

Xew York. June 1 Tho market opened
inclined to bo weak on lower prices from
London nnd fresh liquidation throughout
tho wholo list. Around opening prices,
however, theio was Quito free covering
of shorts which caused a faint rally dur
ing early pan of day. Later on a sharp
break in Metropolitan and Manhattan
started new decline evidently for tho
puipose of enabling shorts to cover ns
subsequently Sugar was bid up to 141 on
small transactions and on soma further
covering by the smaller trading bears.
'1 he maikct has shown no paitleular fea
ture during tho day nnd shows no decided
change from professional ones of last
two weeks We teel distinctly bullish
for a turn and purchases hero If hung to
on any fulr margin aie pretty safe to
show fair pioflts It took a long vvhllo
for tho downward turn to set In and Is
taking equally ns long tor tho upward
move to to reassert itself, but It Is com
ing and buyers at low prices will hnvo
no cause to regret their purchases. The
only question Is ns to what low prices
may bo In our opinion, tho present
values have depreciated enough from
tho highest point to warrant conserva
tive purchases nnd we think Continental
Tobacco, Brooklyn Rapid Transit. Fed
eral Steel and tho Grangers gcneially
can bo taken hold of with almost cer
tainty. Iho c!o3o was actlvo and btrong.
