If indications amount to anything the
result of the meeting of council, last
night, and tin action they took In nn

that will nutl.o things decidedly un

matter lo distinguish the fact that if
our mayor is further frustrated In that
which he believes to be his ulaln duty,
he will sin itly commence a programme
of reform tint will make many who

THE SCHOOLEY MINE FLOODED.
It Is Thought That the Susquehanna
River Mny Be Pouring Into tho
Crevices.
Yesterday tho most hopeful signs
were In evidence that tho caving lu of
the old workings In the S'chooley shaft
would not lesult In much dnmage out
side of making some repairs and tho
loss of work to the employes, since the
disturbance commenced. Later, this
fa voi able condition of things suddenly
changed, and when Superintendent
Dry den nrd other ofllclals descended
to the Hed Vsh vein thev were sur
piibed to find that water from the
liver was pouring Into the mine, nnd
that the lower vein had been so thor
oughly filled in this short time that
I hey were unable to land nt the foot
of the thaft. and the pump used for
keeping clown the usual quantity of
mine water was submerged, and prac
tically uselc-s. SoniMthlng had to bo
dono, and done quick. Mr. Uryden
came to the surface and soon a largo
squad of muchlnlbts were nt work
erecting huge pumps, which will bo
put to work, and endeavor to cope with
what may yet ultimately drown out the
mine. Tliero Is no means yet of as
certaining hew extensive the break is,
but the surface Indicates by largo
cracks lending towards the liver, tint
the volume of water which Is pour
ing Into tho mine must certainly come
ficm the rivei. L.isl night, and after
the pumps hud been set to work, there
was a more hopeful sign as the water
in the shaft after a few hours' pump
ing, hud receded in the shaft several
Inches. A large bucket with a capacity
of S.'.d gallons, has been hung lu the
shaft, and It Is hoped by this means
that the water will be so reduced a.s
to enable the men to reach that por
tion of the mine where tho water hus
broken through, and make some at
tempt to close the opening. The vein
is 'how tilled with gas, and th" work
to lu done Is of the mos-t dangerous
kind but Mine Inspector McDonald,
with the ofl'cials who have been on
the ground nil day, cue taking every
precaution for the safety ot those en
gaged lu the work Outside of the
mine there are no indications of any
thing seriously wrong, but under tho
surface there is a disturbance in mo
tion that will piovo, both costly and
unfortunate 'or the company, besides
throwing several hundred men nnd
boys out of employment.
The most hopeful vlw of the acci
dent Is, that below the surface and
quick sand, there Is a bed of clay that
may eventually block the crevices,
stopping the flow of water, us It did at
the time of tho Twin shaft disaster.

Sentiment appeared somewhat mixed,
however, and ot the advance the market
met free selling from tho trading shorts,

selling down below the closing prices of

Anuket developed a weak undertone.
Traders as a rulo arc woiklng tor lower

of those, who havo lost their money and
their securities, upon the advices of the
bull leaders, the market Is one to bo left
alone, and In consequence, tho outsldo
demand has fallen to ulmost nothing.
Tho story of bargain huntcis and anx

until there has been a lower level of
