niE SCRANTON TMBUiNJ--T11U13SDA1', MAY' 4, 1899. NEWS OF THE GREAT INDUSTRIAL WORLD D., L. & W. HAS ADOPTED A SYS TEM OF ENGINE NUMBERING. As Soon na the Work Can Bo Done Each Engine Is Given a Number That Donates Its Class Number of V.t It. & W. Engines That Havo Outlived Their Usefulness Have Been Sold for Scrap Iron Opinion of nn Architect. Slowly but surel the day of divi sions on the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad Is passing and oon It will bo just one straight name to apply to the whole road. This means that a person traveling along the road from lloboken to Huffulii will not noe Morris and Essex division, liuffalo division, etc, on cars and en gines. Then will simply be a num ber anil the letters D., L. & W. This numbering und lettering Is a new Idea nn the Delaware, Lackawan na and Westcin road, though com monly In vogue on nearly ull other mails, especially In the west. Tho method of doing the work Is classified and to the Initiated the locomotive power becomes a sort of open book. For Instance, tho switch engines, or "shuntuis," ns tho railroader Is wont to rail them, will be numbered from 1 to li', Inclusive. The next largest engine, say a slx-wheeler, will be num bered 101 to 199. Inclusive; eight wheeler. Ml to 2!1, Inclusive, and so on, giving n series so that It Is evident at a glance what sort of an engine Is pulling a train. This work Is being accomplished ns rapidly ns posstnle and every day nn engine comes out with a sort of patent leather llnlsh with the letters D., L. i V. on the cab sides and the series number 2' feet high on tho tender in dull yellow color. SIGNING THE AGREEMENT. Gradually all of the big contractors and lumber merchants hereabouts aru Mgnlng the agrocement to use only union made tiim. As an Indication of how things were going, 1 wns stated by Mr. Williams, the Woodworkers' agent, that one firm sent for tho union label, though pre viously they had opposed the use of It. REPLACING OLD ENGINES. The Delaware. Lackawanna and Western Jtallroad company has dis posed of Ilfteen engines to a firm In Lebanon, Pa., ns so much scrap Iron. The engines were singled out nil along the road and some of them are now CEYLON INDIA TEA Better than coffee, be cause it does not disturb digestion, but it is stimu lating and healthful. Following Is the opinion of a well known nrchlteet concerning the pos'.l bllltlcs of a strike In the HulMInK Trades In June: "So far us my work at piosent Is concerned, I do not believe that the prospect of any strike Is affect'iir It. In my opinion tho city proper hua lie come situated with double resld'Mire, tenement flats and large oflltv build ings and no more will be built for soma time. Tho work today Is confined prin cipally to small and a few larger dwellings In the suburbs and this work Is not affected by any prospect of a strike." HAVE CONSOLIDATED. The consolidation of the Notional Holt, Nut nnd Klvet works, of Head ing. I'a and Hie Lebanon Iron com pany, of Lebanon, Pa., has been ef fected and the combined Interests with fully subscribed capital stock of $700, 000 will be opeiated under the charter of the Lebanon Iron company, one of the most valuable charters over Issued by the state of Pennsylvania. Additions will be made to tho al ready large plant to accommodate ma chinery for the manufacture of tho heavier lines of bolts, nuts, forging?, etc. TO DEVELOP COAL LAND. The Clinton Coal company, to be cap italized at $.'00,000, has leased f.,000 acres of coal land In Lcldy township, Clinton county, embracing tracts owned by the Noyon estate, W. A. Simpson and A. II. The two parties in interest havo ngreed upon a plan for the yearly adjustment of wages. This agreement extends to all the foundries In Cincinnati. Covington and Newport and affects about 20,000 employes. THIS AND THAT. Not only are the Hungarians nnd Italians leaving the nnthracite coal regions, but the Tyroleans, who came here In large numbers years ago, aro departing for their native homes across the ocean. Lehigh Valley railroad train flag men's wages have been Increased ten cents per day. They had been receiv ing $1.05 per day and now receive $1.75. Train flagmen In yards who received $1.S0 per day now get $1.90. The cut of 10 per cent, made in the wages of tho employes of the Exeter cotton mills at Exeter, N. H in Janu ary, 189S, has been restored. The Ex eter Manufacturing company, who con trol the mills, lias six hundred hands on Its pay roll. The Coal Exchange at Pottsvllle, Pa., has announced the wages of miners and laborers in the coal region nt A per cent, below the $2.50 basis for tho last half of March and the first week in April. This Is 4 per cent, better than last month. There are 450 employes to every 100 miles of railroad in the United States. The Lehigh Valley is now actively engaged In tho soft coal business, and on an average Is shipping sixty large gondolas from the soft coal mines in the western part of tho state. Avoca Is to have another silk mill. It will bo built close to the present mill and be 13S feet long, fifty feet wide and three stories high. C F. Ward, of Taylor, has the contract for erecting tho structure, which will lie used as a throwing mill, where 200 or more hands will find employment. The Bethlehems havo practically four silk mills, employing in the neighbor hood of 1.800 operatives. Ono of these, the Lehigh Valley, Is so rushed for orders that enough employes cannot bo readily secured for the manufneturo of the different silks and ribbons turned out. Recently new machinery was added to the mill, furnishing employ ment to more than 200 people. Wall Street Review. Hy Associated Press. New York, May a. The stock market moved in nn uncertnln manner todny and left off generally lower with tho declines most accentuated in thu Coalers, Con solidated Ons, Sugar nnd American Spir its. Commission house business was small nnd London and a number of pro fessionals realized prollts on stocks bought at the low figure yesterday. Much of the buying appeared to bo covering of shorts Tho early trading continued tho strength of yesterday's closing but real izing and sales on the theory thut the re covery had been too rapid took tho snap otit of tho market. Tho weakness of tho Coalers was on heavy sales by a. promi nent holder who had been carrying n long lino of these properties. Disappointment was expressed In some quarters that no announcement was forthcoming concern. Ing a coal deal now thnt tho New Jersey legislature hns been adjourned for some time. The Steel nnd Wire stocks dis played firmness on tho belief that ne gotiations were pending to consolidate a number of these properties. Although nothing positive as to the details could bo learned It was said that a capitaliza tion of over half a billion dollars was cotitemplattd. The application of Amer ican Steel and Wlro to bo listed by tho exchange together with dividend gossip was an aid to that stock. Brooklyn Rapid Transit fluctuated widely and closed with over u point advance. Peo ple's Gas and Pacific Mall wero also strong. The general railway list was fractionally lower. Consolidated Gas re covered somewhat on covering but on tho Increased cutting of gas prices again broke sovetal points and closed nearly 2 off on tho dny. The arrangement to re tire tne first preferred stock of Minne apolis ami St. Louis caused a rise of over 4 points in the second preferred. Tho closing of pool accounts In American Spirits nnd Sugar was said to account for tho weakness In these properties. Tho market closed wenk. Total sales, G4i,100 shares. Most of the prominent bond Is sues scored improvements today with fhe advnnees quite marked in somo cases. Total sales, I2.5nu.0tii). United States to coupon nnd the new 4s do., advanced H in the bid pi Ice. By Carrington & Cusack. New York, May 3. Tho market opened strong and fractionally higher on fresh covering by belated shorts anil some buying by Flower Interests and commu nion houses. At the advances, sales to realize prollts. caused a fractional net back, but in the main the mntket was strong throughout the day, Brooklyn Rapid Transit, tho Steel tocks nnd Grangers being the principal features. Monday's decline and scare lias cleared out weak holders nnd the market has been trengthened thereby, but at the samo time tho buying power has been hurt nnd the market shows Its effect in tho falling oft in transactions. This mar ket Is controlled by the great outsldo public nnd once tho demand declines, Just so surely will tho great advance be over. The general list is beginning to alio symptoms of this now and we think the time to make big money In tho general railroad stocks has passed. Specialties aro to bo tho order of the day and traders who buy the better Industrials, Traction stocks, and specialties are going to bo tho big wlnncid. The Gun war has upset speculation somewhat and the heavy de cline In Manhattan nnd .Metropolitan Street Railway has shaken faith In them but at tho same time the whole ten dency Is towards nn Improvement in values and bear raids will not be profit able for some time to come. Keene Is inclined to feel tho market at times for lower prices but only in a small way and so far with little success. Such weathc as we are Caving pretty much tho coun try over cannot but favorably affect tho wheat situation nnd we think tho re poits from now on are likely to show im provement. Federal Steel common Is al most a sure purchase for 20 points against a :: per cent, margin. Certain negotia tions aro under way and we shall wake up somo rainy Thursday morning and find Carnegie, Bethlehem, the National, Tin Plato and American Steel and Wlro in one big combination and Federal Steel common selling close to par. We havo relations with one of the highest offi cials In one of those companies and our Information Is not based on "news" but on tacts. The market closed firm with a probability of higher prices tomorrow. Quotations furnished by LA11AR & FILLER, slock, grain and cotton orok ns, rooms 20? and 210 Board of Traae building, Scranton.
