"I do a good deal of this sort of thing," isald Sousa to a Tribune man as ho proceeded with his pen vai'. "Last yenv I wrote In six thousand autograph albums " Sousa's tour this year einlnueod thirty thousand miles of territory, and while skipping about the country and giving one and two concerts each day he was sketching the music of two new operas he is under voiitiact to have ready for next season. One of them Is for De Wolf Hopper, and tho book for this Is the wo"rk of George Hloadhurst, who wrote "The Specula tot" and "What Happened to Jones." The book of the other opera Is the work of Chillies Kline and Urant Stew art. The Katharine Hobcr company opened a week's engagement at the Academy of Music last evening, with Kilwin Knowl's successful drama, 'The Great Diamond Robbery." There was a. largo uudlenee. The company Is a, very strong one. In the cost nto such well known peo ple ns Franklyn Ritchie, James Ken nedy, comedian, and Miss Katherlne. Rober. This play Is well known to Scranton theatre-goeis, and needs no mention. The scenery of Act II, the home of Senator McSorker, was very beautiful. James Kennedy was the brother of the late Lillian Kennedy, who played In this city last season In "The Deacon's Daughter." "Mr. Ken nedy made a decided hit In the rolo of Mrs. O'Grogan Mr. Ritchie ns Dick Iirummage assumed the leading tola with great force. The company through out Is one of the strongest been ut the Academy this season. This afternoon and evening Lillian Kennedy's success ful play, "The Deacon's Daughter," will be given. "Little Egypt" nt the Gaiety. The original "Little Egypt-' of Seeley dinner fame, drew large audiences at the Gaiety theater yesterday both af ternoon and evening. Her performance near the close of tho entertainment was very brief, but was of the class that Is best appreciated In Homeo pathic doses. In the few moments that she appealed on the stage all wore convinced that "Little Egypt" was gl -Ing as near the genuine as possible in the dance that made the Woild's Fair at Chicago famous. The perfoimance given by the bal ance of the tioupe was of the usual older, and tho specialty artist came in for a good shatc of applause. Among the stars of tho olio weie Atmstrong and Potter; the little ginger girls, Gnr nold and Gltmore; John and Llllle Hlack, Hastings and Wright, and Vir ginia Seymour. The "Little Egypt" builesqueiH will be seen at the Gaiety this afternoon and evening and tomor row afternoon and evening. Crane's New Play. "The Head 01 the Family," Mr. Ciane's new play and the one which he will present at the Lyceum theater tonight, has had many pleasant things said about It in the cities In which .t has been seen. The play Is a modern comedy and in its original has been highly successful for several years in Germany. In transfenlng it to an American environment Its adapters, Clyde Fitch and Loo DItilchstein, ate said to have preserved all of Its humor and they are credited with adding to It one really strong scene not con tained in its otlglnal. This scene comes at the close of the second act and during the time the play claimed attention In New York It never failed to win for Itself the tiibute of sym pathetic teais. Thete aie a number of good parts In the comedy and they aie said to be In vciy capable hands. West's Minstrels. The appearance of William II. A rise In call money and a recurrence of discrimina tion in loans against tho Industrials caused prices to recedo below Saturday's close In the afternoon trading. Tho mar ket, as usual on Monday after u strong Saturday closing opened active nnd strong on an accumulation of outside orders. Kxcept for a spurt of strength in llio Grangers, with llurllngtou leading, al though they subsequently lost about all of tbolr earlier gain, tho dealings wero largely confined to the industrials and specialties. Prominent In the early strength were the Tobacco, Iron and steel shar s, 'lAnncondo. Mining', Cotton Oil mid General 131octrlc. Manhattan, Sugar and IlrooMyn Transit wero consistently weak, although Ilrooklyn Transit re coil red somewhat from tho lowest. Many of tho specialties which ha1 ndvaticid most leit'llly early wero equ.Uly conspic uous in tho afternoon decline, esptclnllv Continental Tobacco, Federal Steel, Col orado l-'uel and Iron and American Stcrl and Wire. Tho general market left off lather weak. Total sales, 811,700 shares, lluslncss In railway mortgages was well distributed today and a generally higher 1 ango of pi Ices established. Total sales, $7,CH,-,O0H. 1'nltcd States new Is regis terod, tho old 4s do., and tho 3s registered ndvanced '1 and tho new is coupon U In tho bid price. Dy Cnrrlncton ft Cusack. New Yoik, April 7. Tho maikcl opened fairly strong In the Grangers, hut with some liquidation In Brooklyn Itapld Ttan sit and Manhattnn. The buying of rail road stocks during the early morning was very good lullucticcd by more favor nblo crop reports Trom Washington nnd also by favorable bank statement of last Saturday. Realizing began In the list, however, shortly after the opening and nt times the market sold off quite sharp l. lliuoklyn Hnpld Tianslt, Manhattan and Federal Steel l.ilng the greatest suf ferers. Tho dclliio, although it was un explained was not unnatural considering the Hharp advance that has taken plaje Mneo tho lato break and we do not think holders need have any fear of the out come. It Is possible there may be afialn iomewbat lower prices, but we do not think the hunk If It comes, will bo any thing but a temporary one. The market has two very decided sides to It, but on all recessions Is a great purchase. Hur llngton, Tin Plate. Ilrooklyn Itapld Tran sit and Federal Steel are going eiy much hlglu In the near future nnd should bo pinclinsed. Colorado Fuel and Iron is also a good putchnse around the present price Towards the close, trailers cov ered freely throughout tho wholo list, causing the sharp rallv from the lowest prices of the day, and thero Is a prob ability that tho reaction l.s over. Con tinental Tobacco was vcrj stiong thioughout tho day and Inside bulug continues around these prices. It would not sutprlse. us it the stock has another sharp advance within a slioit time. Wo see nothing in tho situation other than local conditions to change tho trend of the market and advise purchases when ever weak as It was today. The close was steady at a fair recovery from tho lowest prices. Quotations furnished bv LAI1AU & rt'LLIin, stock, gtaln and cotton Brok ers, looms 209 and 210 Hoard of Trade building, Scranton, Pa.
