n two suits brought beforo Alderman
Millar yesterday afternoon. Miss Mar
tha Lewis, of West Scranton, nppeared
at prosecutrix. Mis Low Is stated
that she bad worked for the Davles'
but for several reasons she left there
Tho other day she went to get her
clothes and Mrs. Davles, she alleges,
refused to give them up. Hence the
suit. The Davles" were first changed
with larceny. They were held In $100
ball for their appearance at court. The
other chaigre was selling liquor with
out llfcnse. J500 ball was required In
this Instance.
Alderman JTowo held Joseph Domll
sky, of tho Hats, In $200 ball yesterday,
for his appearance at court, on a
charge of obtaining goods on false
pretenses." D. Josephson, of 407 Penn
avenue, nppoaicd ns prosecutor, and
alleged that the defendant had gotten
a lult of clothes valued at $10 In bis
store, March 1:9 last, promising to pay
for or htnd them back within a week.
He had dono neither and jet bad the
bllit.
Margaret Dlmler, who just got out
of jail a few days ago, was Riven a
hci:ltr yesterday before Alderman
Howe charged with the larceny of a
coat belonging to Alice Conlln, who Is
now serving lime In the county jail.
Margaret stated that Alice loaned her
the coat until bho could get out, but
she could have It back light now. Miss
Dlmler was discharged.
ON A TOUR OF INSPECTION.
Superintendent Fitz Gibbon Made a
Trip Over the Northern Lines.
Superintendent John M. Fitz Otbbou,
head of the motive power and machln

Thursday night from a tour of In
spection over the lines north of Scran
ton, and left jesterday afternoon for
New York to confer with President
Truesdale over changes that ure to be
made and innovations that are to be
adopted.
He said to a Tribune reporter yester
day that he had nothing of public In
terest to Rive out as yet, beyond what
has already been published, but ex
pected befoie lonrr to be In a position
to announce- other plans that the com
pany has in view.

under the law, the mayor's veto of the
af-phalt repair appropriation must btf
returned to councils expires. The sub
ject of the legality of that veto will
probably theteloic soon come up,
bringing with It the general subject
of lepalrs by contract or by the city
dlrontl.v, through a municipal repair

ance adopted last fall, tabulated so aa

veyor of New York city. In Buffalo,
In the parks, where the only wear and
tear is from light vehicles, no heavy
haulage belnar allowed, the cost Is C
cents per squaio yard for every yard
of paving, whether In need of repairs
or not. In Minneapolis tho cost under
a ten year contract Is 10 cents, repairs
being continuous fiom the time of the
lnylng of the pave. Tho assertion that
the rate asked in Scranton is an ex
orbitant rate Is. therefore, not sustain
ed by comparative Usurps.
In Wilkes-Barre, wheie the city
owns a repair plant, S'2 miles of as
phalt cost for repairs $3203 per mile
In less than two years. At the fame
rale Scranton, with a city plant, Mould
have to ray for city repairs on its more
than twelve miles of asphalt over $22.

they should do so quickly and thuo ex
pedite the much needed Improvement.

company, artlved in the city at mid
night and went direct to Hotel Jcr

His visit was unexpected by local
railroad men. but It Is supposed be
came to talk with Superintendent of
Mntle Tower Fltzglbbons, concerning
the hitter's tour of inspection of the
company's lands and to straighten out
n reported clash of authority that has
occurred between olllclals of the com
pany in this city.

He Is Pitcher Stultz, of Louisville,
Ky. Team Will Begin Practice
on Monday Arranging Ex
hibition Games.
Another of Manager Swift's players
arrived in the city yestcrdnv. He Is
Pitcher Stulti!, of Louisville, Ky.. who
put in an appearance during the after
noon. The players now In the city nro
Pitchers Ilodson, Allen, Stultz, Catcher
O'Neill and Outfielder Knoll. A large
batch of players are expected today,
and all of them will liavo reported by
Monday.
The players under contract are:
Catchers, Phocki a, O'Neill and Hughes;
pitchers, Hodson, Keenan, Stultz, Ills
ley and Allen: first base, Dillon; sec
ond bnse, O'Connor; Bhort stop, Mc
Mahon and Stokes; third base, Wheeler
and Dougherty; outfield, Gilbert, Knoll,
Eagan, Llppert and Flnnen.
There Is some doubt nbout Gilbert
coming here. Auburn, with whom ho
played last season, claims him, al
though Manager Swift, who returned
yesterday from New York state, wheie
ho investigated Auburn's claims, be
lieves that Scranton will land him yet.
Gilbert Is said to be a swift, sine fielder
and a timely hitter.
Monday tho men will get down to ac
tive practice. They will be divided into
two teams and Manager Swift will
have an opportunity of getting a line
on the ability of his men.
The league season opens Apt 11 27, and
on Mondav the schedule will be decid
ed upon at (Philadelphia. It is prob
able that Scranton will open ut Pat-
erson. Tho first exhibition game will
bo played In Scranton this week be
tween the local team and Stroudsburg
Normnl s-chool team or Wyoming setnl
nury. Thro will be a. few exhibition
games with Wllkes-Barre, and on April
23, 24 and 2."i tho Scranton club will play

Several Cases In Which There Were
Unusual Features.
Mrs. Grace Jewell, the woman found
asleep in a box car on Mlfllln avenuo
switch at 1 o'clock yesterday morning,
was discharged by Mayor Molr yester
day upon her making a statement that
she intended to leave the city never
to return.
About ten minutes ufter Tatrolman
Peny lauded the Jewell woman in tho
citation, Patrolman Parry came along
with a man named Andrew Blanch
field, whom he found sleeping In a
box car at the other end of the switch
from where Mis. Jewell's car was lo
cated. He was also allowed to go.
Martin Grace was picked up by Pa
trolman Perry enily yesterday morn
ing on Lackawanna avenuo for belns
drunk and abusive. When bearched
at the station house a loaded revolver
wot. found on his person. Ho paid a

Mayor Molr yesterday stated that he
will sign it when It comes to him.
When the resolution was on Its way
through tho old councils Mayor Molr,
who was then chairman of common
council mled it out of order, on the
ground that a resolution can not
change the provisions of nu oulinance.
The time for holding the parade and
inspection is fixed by the ordinance for
the third Thursday In September. The
lesolutlon seeks to change the date
this year to May S, the opening day of
the Iiremon's fall. When the resolu
tion catno up In the old common com
ell objection was made to It on this
fecore nnd the chair had to rule It out
of order.
The mayor sas he ha no objection
to the resolution and since it has been
given unanlmout consent In councils he
will sign It when it comes to him. It
Is expected that it will be placed be
foie him today.
Had the purpose of the resolution
been fully brought to the knowledge of
councils In tho first place, the mayor
says, theie would likely have been no
opposition to It whatever.
Tho tegular weekly meeting of the
general committee having charge of
the fair was held last night In the
common council chamber. Encourag
ing reports were received from tho ex
ecutive committee and the delegates.
Excellent wnik Is being done by the
ladles' (ommlttees. Already two hun
dred and sixty ladles have enlisted to
assist in soliciting donations and work
ing at the booths. There committees
are divided among four distrlcts.North
End. Most Side, Central City and
South Side. They hold meetings week
ly and aro dhected In their work by
the general manager of the fair, C. F.
Macqulvey.
It has been decided to hnve the fair
open each day from 2 to 12 o'clock p.
m. Theie will be a band concert each
evening nnd special entertainments on
Saturday evenings.
The Illuminating Heat and Power
company has offered gratis the service
of its electricians and the free use of
material for decorating the armory.
A beautiful full-sized American flag
wes yesterday received from White
head & Hoag, of Newark, N. J., badge
and banner manufacturers.

Attendance at the High School
Promises to Be Large.
Next year at the high school prom
ises to bo a record breaker in the mut
ter of attendance. There were 403
Grammar A pupils in the class exam
ine d yesterday for promotion and
Superintendent Howell stated that ev
eiy one of these pupils is in good
standing and likely to pas-i the exam
ination. The total enrollment at tho high
school this year Is C16. Last year
there were 3S3 Grammar A pupils ad
