IN THE THEATERS
"Tho Linra" at tho Lyceum.
John Drew Is featured ns the star of
the company which presented Henry
Arthur Jones' comedy, "The Liars," at
tho Lyceum Inst night, but he Is a very
unobtrusive star, for the very excellent
renoon that Mr. Jones has written n
comedy Instead of a vehicle to exploit
n star. The audience liked It all tho
better foi that It's hard to construct
it comedy fot a t-tar and preserve tho
Inlet est, humor and dramatic unities
Mr. Jones has reached that happv
period of his career us u writer for the
xtORo when ho no longer has to-try. He
does not hav to erect comedies to
unlet.
In "The l.lniH" ho has dlldcd tho In
tficst to advantage between four lead
Ins characters. Thero Is never a dull
moment, the utago nocr walls and
there Is no necessity for whirlwind
climaxes to tide the comedy ovei the
petlod when the star Is taMng ft breath
ing spell
There will be a wide difference of
pinion about the desirability of tnklng
as the lia.e of a comedy the theme
which Mr. Jones selected, but there can
ho no dissent from tho opinion that It
Is a mnrveluuslv well constructed play.
The atmosphere may be faulty; It lin
pnhibl Is, but few thentre-Roeis will
ilnd anv particular fault with that.
I'hey like 01 dislike a play for what
Ih fondly believe Is Its moral rather
i linn Its atmosphere, and If they con
sider The Liars" lonpr enough they can
llnd tho moral, and, what Is altogether
eeellent about the comedy, can Unci
ItiM the kind of a moral they most do
sire. Tim i.imnnin could be Improved up
on but little Mi. Drew as Sir Clirls
tophei Peering was ety subdued for
Mi. Diew, his eyes and mustache play
ing but unlmpoitant parts In the por
truvat ol the role for which he was cast.
Nabtlle li lug's woik was extremely
unoen One moment she was the true
artist, the next ai Uncial and disap

niece; Jennie A. Eustace, Maile Der
leks.on and Geitiude Oheen vvem other
xcellcnt membcr.s of the company who
had lmpmtant rolts..
As In all of the Chatles Trohman pro
ductions the staging ot tho comedy
was an encaging fe.ituie ot the per
formance The audience completely
tilled the theatet. After the third
act Mi. Dipw received a cuitaln call.

Tlieie Is no butlesqup organisation on

than 1'ied. Klder's celel)iated "Night

of three Ias at the Gaiety on Thurs

this season Is an unusually strong one,
Including the famous D.uling sisters,
hie and charming. Krooks and Brooks,
the clovei comedians, Ovvly Randall,
the oiiglnal Hebrew Juggler, Colton
