Ambassador Choate's recent remaik that the United States and the United Kingdom would doubtless continue a friendly rivalry In legutd to the world's commerce Is quite justified by the latest figures on tho commeiee of the two countries as sup plied by the ticusury bureau of statis tics. March IS.-This week has In some respects been 11 most remarkable one of all tho year of remarkable markets In the street During the earlv part of the week tho matket was dull nnd Incllntnl to weakness, owing to tho stringency In money duo to heavy payments to the gov ernment on account of the Central Pacific notes and to tho financing of Alton sale. 1'P to Thursday tho market showed slight evidence of any real movement being likely. On that day, however, tho whole list was favorably affected by a remark able rlso In Sugar stocks which carried prices to record figures and Incidentally strengthened Industrials and railroad se curities. Short Interest was heavily whipped all along the lino, and the last dajs of the week saw an actlvo nnd strong market. Aside from the gyrations of Sugar thcro was no ical news to have affected nnv change. Money which has been tho bugaboo for the last three weeks was again tho mnln feature In tho speculation Several times during tho week, call lonns were made at ( per cent, and there was a good deal of discrimina tion of loans In collateral so that specu lation was held In check. The banks have mndo heavy disbursements for govern ment account and there seems n prob ability there will bo a certain amount of eloseness for a couple of weeks at least, to come. Aside from this, there Is no rial chango In the situation since tho pre vious weeks ending. Tho business situation of tho country continues to bo exceptional. The week's clearings show a gain of 37 C per cent. over iyi; nnu zi 1 per cent, ever last jear. Without regard to details, however, tho volume of business In nil branches Is tho greatest ever known Tho railroad earn ings show very small material changes, thero being a slight Increase over last year, duo to tho good weather of tho early weeks of tho month Tho tonnage movement from Chicago, however, shows a decrease over last year with a slight Increase over 1812. Ono significant feature In tho situation is that exports which h" been so much of a feature during "1 last two ears are beginning to hIh' decrease nnd Imports nn Increase tho changes nro small up to present t the fict that the current seems to It In the other way must not he lost Mf h of. Our balance of trade which has In m the mnln cause of tho wonderful revival In the business situ itlon shows some do pletlon during the month and a continu ance of It will reverse our position as re gards the nations of the world. While this Is but a stiaw which shows how tho wind may blow, et It Is just such a small Indication as this that must be taken up and together with others of the like char acter to enable nt moment of any mnte ilal set-back, and whllo wo think our selves the continuance of an upward movement In tho value of securities Is llkelv et In tho end a point must bo leached wheio tho tide will bo nt Its full To determine this point tho situation at largo must be taken Into account for that reason wo advise the greatest enre In both Investment and speculative movements Tho present vear will undoubtedly seo very high prices for specialties and In dustilal stoehs ind tho speculation In them will undoubtedly be a leaturo of the market during spring and summer months. Wo are of the opinion therefore that the stocks to purchase are tho low priced common stocks of tho Industilal corporations and railroads of special geo graphical position which must nppre eiate In value from the great Increase In tho volumo of business. Tho day's market was Irregular up to the bank statement which being better than ex pected, closed the market strong Tgial sales, 351.81. Bonds $2,240000.
