How St. Patrick's Day Was Observed

It onn easily bo placed on the calen

today was tho quietest and inoit
unostentatious In tho history of thin
city ho far as It may refer to St. Pat

Hibernians had completed arrange

A large purado was arranged for which

were many noticeable features, denot

Irish citizens. Many places were hung
with green bunting nnd (lugs. Im
printed with the harp and entwined
with the stars and stripes, ill the eve

to the credit of our Irish people, there
were no disturbances to mar the quiet
features of the day, and later the an
nual event closed by several balls and
entertainments, the foimer by the
Kntls club at Keystone holl and the
Crystal Social club at tho armory. In
I'ppor rlttston the Daughters of Krln
held an tntertolnmont and supper in
the Campbell's Led Re hall, anil In both
numbers and merit It was :i successful
financial affair.
There was a high old time In the city

meeting of the select council Member
Honncgnn protested against the .at

tain n motion sprung by one of the
members. Ills request was not heeded
and he withdrew, leaving that body

Wall Street Review.
New York, March 17. Tho railwayn
after a display of strength in sym
pathy with the buoyancy In Btigar,
sngged In anticipation of Februnry not
returns not meeting expectations, and
tho result was marked not declines in
thoio properties. A number of tho nc
tlve specialties moved upward but
some of tho "green" idustrlnls were
exceptions, Including Federal Stool,
American Steel nnd Wire, Continental
Vr.bncco and International Paper.
These properties suffered because of
tho diversion of Interest from them to
Sugar. Sugar, which nt ono time was
within Hi points of Its record figure
yesterday, scored a net ndvance of S
points. Glucose wns up sympathetic
ally. The aggregate of dealings, while
below those of yesterday, exceed three
quarters of n million shares, of which
130,000 wore sugar. The fact that tho
banks have lost over $9,000,000 to tho
sub-treasury since Friday led traders
lo expect mi unfavorable bank state
ment tomorrow, and on this theory
they sold stocks, Among the stocks
showing strength were People's Gas,
Tennessee Coal nnd Iron, Colorado
Fuel nnd Iron, Metropolitan Street
Hallway, Brooklyn Transit and Man
hattan, which was quoted ex-dlvldend
and ex-rights. Total sales today wcro
762.400 shares. There was some liquida
tion nmong the active bond Issues to
day while strength prevailed In other
quarters. Total hales, $2,2;0,000. Unit
ed States new Is coupon advanced ,
do. registered '4, and the old 4b regis
tered and the threes U In the bid price.
Py .1. R. I Carrlngtou & Co
Now York, March 17th. The lmilft
op"iied excited nnd higher with Sugar
again tho principal feature, the stock
varying two pulnts at opening sale. Dur
ing early part of the day People's (las,
and Brooklyn Itanld Transit with Ilur
llugton nnd Quliiey and Grangers general
ly, weio the leading features. There was
homo evidence of realization on the ad-
vnnro but tho market on the main was
very strung and cornlderlng the condi
tions, wonderfully well supported. Tho
late movement In Sugar spurted the whole
market und according to popular belief,
Is likely to lead to fne bull speculation
In tho specialties. The advance was en
lltely unexpected even by the lenders and
It looks as If it were possible that the
ri.'e which lias been predicted ni likely
to como next month had shown up in
advance.
Money at tho close yesterday prevented
n continuance of the movement nnd to
day has been in evidence somewhat. Bank
statement tomotiuw Is liable to be a
clitic al point In the mniket: if It Is any
way favorable It Is likely wo shall have
11 further advance next week. If It Is bad
it will bo followed tv a very sharp de
cline as tho short Interests In tho market
has practically eliminated. As we point
ed out several days ntjo. the stocks avail
able for sales oro very small and iny
pronounced movement on the bear side,
is "itiro to bo followed by very sharp and
quick rallies.
For that reason we do not advise sales
except on very strong .upward move
ment and then merely for a turn. On all
weak snots we advise nurehnse of Fed.
oral Steel common, Manhattan Railway,
mi Plate, Ameilean Steel and u Ire,
Coalers nnd Grangers. t:nlon Pacini:,
while It may be slow Is a sure purchase
11 round 45 for very much higher llguivs
it held. In tho late afternoon, the mar
ket sold off somewhat owing to liquida
tion by early buyers and temporarily
higher rates for money. Manhattan as
we advised you the other day, had a
sharp rally yesterday nnd maintained Its
advance today. The stock Is worth noth
ing like Its present prleo but may be
lu Id stiopg in Iho market temporarily.
It Is a great sale, however, on any up
ward movement. In connection with tho
ilie lu Sugar, we have tho very best rea
sons for saying that we believe tlm story
which has been published as to a com
bination of nil the Interests Is practically
correct, although no public announce
1111 nt of the fact Is likely at this time.
Market closed steudy. Total sales, 767,112.
Bonds, $2..-ill,0e0.
