IN THE PLAY HOUSES.
Pitman Stock Company.
A company of high class actors who
are known ns tho Pitman Stock com
pany began a week's engagement at
the Academy nf Music last night. They
chose for their opening performance
"Lu Hello Marie," which was present
ed In an exceptionally fine manner. An
na K. Davis, In the title role showed
that she Is a talented and discriminat
ing artist. She received admirable sup
pott from Frederick Her.-.og and tho
other members of the company. The
sceneiy and stage settings are a feat
ure of the performance worthy of spe
cial note.
During the performance specialties of
a very clever nature wore Introduced
by nnliy Cecil, Harry A. Iloss. Mamie
Lincoln and the Glackers. The com
pany In every respect Is the best reper
toire organization that has been seen
here for some time.
This ufternoon the company will give
"The Ked Cross Nurse and tonight
"The Hlectrlclnn."
Semon's Company.
Hatry Semon's Extravaganza com
pany began a week's engagement at
the Gaiety theater yesterday atternoon
und Introduced some entertaining spe
cialties before a large audience. A
prominent feature of the performance
wus the comedy presented by the cel
ebrated clown, George H. Adams, and
his two daughters, assisted by A. H.
Jenkins, The sketch called the "Coun
try Terror" Introduced many of the
tricks of pantomime as well as songs
and dances, and was a lively turn
throughout. Little Primrose and
Marty Semon gave Some laughable ex
hibitions In cake walking, and the
dancing of Nettle iiu.imnn was also
well received.
Manager Van Osten, of the Gaiety,
Is ever on the watch to give the pa
trons of that popular theater the best
that Is in the market is made evident
by the engagement of George Thatcher,
the famous minstrel formerly of
Thatcher, Primrose & West minstrels,
to nppear at the Gaiety theater begin
ning Thursday matinee In conjunction
with Semon's Extravaganza company.
George Thatcher has a world-wide rep
utation as a monologue artist, and was
and Is now the leader in that partic
ular line of work. Ho Is constantly
the feature of the vaudeville bills In
such houses as Keith's and Procter's
in New York. Such engagements net
ting hint far more than being a part
ner or proprietor of a minstrel com
pany. He Is paid the highest salary
that Is paid any minstrel performer.
This week happens to be one when he
was disengaged and Manager Van
Osten today was just acquainted with
the fact and immediately made ar
rangements for a half week, and he
apppcars receiving the highest salary
ever paid a performer at the Gaiety
theater. There will be no Increase of
prices for the Thatcher engagement.

THE MARKETS.
Wall Street Review.
New York, March 13. Tho stock mar
ket generally worked fractionally lower
today for the railway list with the most
activity in tho specialties. Tobacco
was a feature with n rise of six points
net. Amcrlcun steel and wire shares
generally were conspicuously strong In
tho forenoon, but later lost ground.
American steel and wire preferred went
up two points in anticipation of a. divi
dend would subsequently be paid and
the stock eased off on realizations,
Metropolitan Street railway showed al
ternate strength and weakness, while
Third avenue was decidedly feverish,
and they ended with a loss of 1 each.
Consolidated Gas met with a loss of
three points. There was comparatively
little doing among tho anthracite coal
ers and Lackawanna and the Heading
seconds were materially higher, while
tho rest wero fractionally up. Tho gen
eral railway list was irregular. Total
sales, 0S3.30O shares.
Py J. It. L. Oarrlngton & Co.
New York, March 13.-Market opened
;i nirally strong with advances In tho
i ca.ers, Tobacco and American Steel and
Alro stocks. Tho specialties wero gen
erally higher but on opening prices, real
ization took place these prices sold oft
to tho extent of largo factions. The trad
lug tho first few minutes seemed to bo
entirely professional. London was in
rllred to buy small quantities of Its spe
cialties principally Atchison preferred, St.
Putil and Union Pacific toeks. The chief
feature was a largo deal In Anaconda
mid with largo sellng for London account.
Iho markets act very peculiarly and nt
the moment seems to bo entirely In tho
hands of professionals who are taking
short profits on both sides.
1 ho bank statement Saturday was so
much better than expected that there was
bono that some outside buying might de
velop, but as far as wo can see, commls
son houses are doing a dlght business
ii ml trading Is mosty confined to cliques
and room Itself. Flower interests aro
talkng very bulllshly on nil their spe
cialties and predicting much higher prices
especially for Ilrooklyn Rapid Transit.
The governor has shown his ability to
liuiido his securities In such a way ns to
follow out his previous utterances mid It's
possible the stock may sell considerably
lisher. At tho same tlmo Its Intrinsic
worth Ih somewhat doubtful and from
Investment standpoint it would bo moro
near Its true value, If Its present prices
were reversed the market continued dull
and fairly strong up to late In the after
noon, when nn advance In tho rate money
to 4 per cent, caused some selling
throughout tho whole list, dropping prices
fractionally.
There was no particular evldenco of
any great pressure on the market and
liquidation seemed to be us much by
eail ybuyers ns by holders. We are In
dued to think that the market will fluc
tuate within narrow limits with tho ex
ception of the specialties which will un
doubhtedly move freely In both directions.
The llrst declaration of the dividend on
Steel and Wiro preferred caused some
little liquidation in tho common stock.
It may sell off somewhat from the pres
ent, but Is a purchase on all weak spots.
There will undoubtedly ho a dividend on
common stock next July and from what
we know of the common, tho tlrst divi
dend paid will bo followed bv others for
some time to romp. Tin Tln. i.wliv
showed some evidences of being ripe for
advance. It is In even better position
than American Steel and Wlro and we
know no better purchase than the com
mon stack on or nround nresent nrlrcs.
Market closed Irregular and somewhat
below- best prices of the day. with a little
selling In the Grangers and Coal stocks.
