2 TLIE SCRANTON TRIBUNE SATURDAY, MARCH 11, 1891), BEST ASSURANCE OP GOOD BUSINESS IT IS FOUND IN THE GENERAL RISE OF WAGES. An Advance of Ten Per Cent, in "Most Cases Throughout tho Indus ;rlnl Centers Tho Volume of Trade Shows no Sign of Decrease at Present Exports Do Not Fall Below Last Year. Now York, March JO. It. O. Dim & Co.'s weekly review uf trade will suy tomorrow: Hy far tho best assurance of good business in the future is found in the general rise of wages. Tlio general advance In cnrnlnga of cotton mill operatives In most cases 10 per cent., of Iron and steel workers generally 10 per cent, and tin plate and sheet work erf front r to 10 pur cent., and of coal miners In some large district?, about as much, has set a paco which most establishments will follow which lmvo reduced wages In past years of depres sion. Those who fall to eomprelliml what such a change muy mean have nly to consider that a tenth lncrcaso in tho wages of nil labor would put into tho markets n new buying demund In nmount about three-quarters of tho entire vuluu of exports to all coun tries. The volume of business shows no sign's of decrease, nnd for tho first full week of March has been about f1.7 per cent, greater than In the samo week of last year and C0.9 per cent, greater Mian in IS!):!. Most ieop!e would not expect tho production of pig Iron to bo affected by tho weather. Vet In the Pittsburg dis trict alone the furnaces running nro said to have produced 13,000 tons per week less than their January output, mi that the decrease in weekly produc tion of all furnaces, 228,191 tons March 1, against 237,639 Feb. 1, does not mean anything more than bad weather. Tha shrinkage of supplies of iron in Feb luary, Just when Increased supplies were expected and needed, has contri buted much to tho extraordinary ad vance in prices, $2.73 in anthracite No, 1, Feb. 1; $2.50 in Bessemer pig at Pitts burg, and $2.73 in grey forge. Tho un sold stocks were also reduced In Feb ruary 46,431 tons, so that the appar ent consumption was 077,979 tons In the short month. Nearly all the work done, of course, Is at the comparatively low prices made in the great contracts three to four months ago, but the few works which are still able to contract for early delivery are charging about what they please, and these quota tions appear in tho published state ments in many; cases $1 to $3 per ton premium H paid for delivery within sixty days. Plates are in especial de mand and higher, but In rails, bars and structural forms the demand and prices are not yet much changed. Tin Is All Right. Tin is firm at 21.58 cents, with con sumption of 2,500 tons monthly, and copper is scarce for spot at 17.75 cents, with lead weaker at 4.30. The trust refuses quotations for tin plates. The demand for coke exceeds the transport ing capacity for the Connellsvlllo re gion, but the output has been 168,679 tons for tho week, furnace being quoted at $1.60 and foundry at $2 per ton. Exports of wheat do not yet fall be low last year's, as many have tor some months exsiected, and the Atlantic ex ports, Hour Included, have been for the week 3,309,002 bushels against 2,890,879 last year, and Pacific exports 603,187 bushels against 1,280,618 last year, with other exports of 407,569 bushels. West ern receipts were 4,071,017 bushels against 3,702,918 for tho same week last year, and the output for the country goes far to check apprehension as de llclency of the crop. Failures for the week have been 182 in the United States against 218 last year and 37 In Canada against 36 last year. IN THE PLAY HOUSES. "Sunshine of Paradise Alley." Denman Thompspn and George W. Ryer's picture of east side New York life. "The Sunshine of Paradise Alley," was presented nt ths Lyceum last night before an nudlence that was in full sympathy with tho play and these who presented it. Tt is homely but sincere drama, with many real touches of na ture that cause many real heart throbs In tu breasts of those who see It. If It is not the greatest play on the boards today it is at least one that no person will be the worse for seeing. The company that presented it last night contains some very capable peo ple. The drama Is relieved of Its sob erness by the Introduction at Intervals of pongs by male and female quar tettes. There was ulso some clever lancing by M. F. Murphy. Engagement Closes Today. The Glbney-Hoofller company will close Its successful week's engagement nt the Academy of Music today. This afternoon "Fogg's Ferry" will be pre lented, and tonight "The Black Flag." "The Lost Paradise." It was with some hesitation and eon ideratble temerity Charles Frohman aunched "Tho Lost Paradise" nt Proc- FINANCIAL. LaBAR & FULLER BROKERS. Hesitating because his advisers termed It a 'labor play," timid with tha fear that as such It would not bo accepted by tho better class of theater patrons, he was at that time and has ever since been catering to. But all years quickly vanished tho llrst night of tho performance, as both the masses nnd tho classes greeted It with storms of upplausc and Joined in proclaim ing It the greatest treatment over giv en that vexed question between cap ital and labor. Spiritualists throughout the United States have been wondering for sev eral years whether Kullar, tho magi cian, was a medium or not. Keilur himself has answered this question In n thousand ways and times, but al ways In tho negntlve. He laughs at tho tricks of tho mediums and has al ways stood ready to duplicate any so called manifestations they claim to bo nble to produce. He declares that "Vi'rythlng ho does Is accomplished by trickery alone and not by means of supernatural power. In his entertain ment this season Kellar Is reproducing tho most Intricate nnd Inexplicable spir itualistic phenomena thu spiritualists have over succeeded in getting up. At Simla, in India, every year the best nnd most noted mediums In the world gather to exploit their art. The Simla seance has hitherto been dem'd the no plus ultra of modiumlstic work. When In India n few years ago Kellar visited Simla unil paw the seance, which teally was a wonderful not work of trickery. Ho has astounded spiritualists who are posted on such matters by reproducing the seance entire upon a fully lighted stage every night, and, best of nil, builds his ca binet piece by piece In the middle of the stage, where all parts of It, inside and outside, nre visible to everyone all the lime. The great magician with a new programme of Illusions will bo seen here at the Lyceum theater this afternoon nnd evening. "The Turtle" Coming. "The Turtle" will be seen In this city on Wednesday evening at the Lyceum with the samo brilliant cast as when originally given at the Manhattan the ater, New York. The funny farce has achieved a wonderful measure of suc cess In Paris, Berlin and Vienna. When seen here It will have such able Interpreters ns Isabello Uvessen, Jen nie Rclfforth. The move ment of stock prices today was irreg ular, the railways being generally fractionally off, while some notnble ad vances were recorded among the spe cialties. The railways and some other standard stocks sagged slightly for lack of attention. In tho early deal ings London was a principal seller, while In tho afternoon some selling appeared for both accounts on prog nostications that there would be an other heavy decrease in the surplus reserve In tomorrow's bank statement, but prophecies as to the bank state ment based on the known data of Fri day had often of late proved mislead ing. The action of the day's market seemed to show that the specialties wero pre-eminently in favor with the professional element. The early deal ings were featured by an almost en tire concentration of Interests into the higher priced stocks which moved in a sensational manner. The standard stocks trailed along somewhat sym pathetically, but soon developed a yielding tendency. In the late ses sion interest shifted Into the low priced specialties, which had not moved proportionately with the rise in the industrial division in the morn ing. The last hours' trading follow ing the Union Pacific announcement was of an exceptionally uninteresting character, scarcely any Interest being evidenced in the movement of prices. The closing was dull and steady. Total sales wero 520,400 shares. Bond prices moved somewhat hesitatingly today, some active Hens working upward while others yielded in sympathy with stock influences. Total sales, $3,375,000. United States new 4s registered ad vanced In the bid price. By J. R. L. Cnrrington & Co. New York, March 10. The nmiket opened it regular and an advance of 4 points In Metropolitan und strength in Brooklyn Rapid Transit und other special ties. Manhattan Railway scored an ad vance, of 8 points In the lirst fifteen min utes with freo buying by Inside Interests. Flower stocks were also strong and Coal ers after a heavy opening gained strength and recovered tho early loss. Ip tho bnlnnce of tho market little was dono nnd prices remained relutlvely unchanged. Tim Iron und steel, stocks, however, showed somo strength. London was a trader to a small extent at opening, our prices being near enough to their parity to prevent much arbitration, They sold, however, somo Atchison preferred, Union Pacific nnd (Southern Railway common. The Flower Interests have been openly bullish on Manhattan Railway, Brooklyn Rapid Transit and their own specialties, und have carried them up to prices which In some cases nro not warranted by tho conditions. Tho cx-govcrnor's following, however. Isvery largo nnd It Is only nec essary for him to advise buying to start thu wholo speculative clement on tho long side. The external conditions affecting prices remain nearly as favorable us they have been but It Is to bo noted that con ditions do not legitimately warrant any further uniform rlao In prices, on tho contrary there Is a feeling that In a good ninny cases prices aro sustuncd by tho extraordinary sanguine temper of the speculation. Certain specialties are un doubtedly selling below their value lust as usually trua certain others nro belling 134 and 136 Washington Ave largely beyond. Prudent holders aro be ginning to realize this nnd aro withdraw ing from tho market until either prices reach a point which warrants ro ln-vest. ment or until such conditions occur to wnrrnnt another advance. Tho hands of tho professionals and can bo moved either up or down without much exertion. The bank statement tomorrow If good should havo a very favorable cfTect on prices next week and unless extraordinary banks may not cause much uneasiness. Tho feeling Is protty general that although rates may work somowhat higher no ac tunl stringency need be feared. For that reason tho money situation has less ef fect on prices than It did somo weeks ago. Tho adjournment of congress has had nn undoubtedly good effect and In tno ab sence of adverse legislation and aside from any foreign complication tho outlook Is undoubtedly for better prices. At tho same tlmo tho market as yet Is In the hands of tho street cliques and It is pos sible tho evidences of tho past few days may bring In such liquidation as to check any upward movement Just at tho mo ment. Tho market is hard to Judgo from otillnnry standards und we must confers wo nro ourselves somewhat mixed on It. Mnnhutlnu Hallway bus sold todny 6 points higher than the price wo fixed nearly sixty dnvs ago for It, and when It was selling below 200. There Is no ques tion In our mind but whnt It will sell, within n fairly short time, abovo so. Mar ket closed very firm with some recessions from best prices.
