ENCHANTED GROVE OF BEES
Tho Buzzing Audible, but Not n Boo

From the Gnlviston News.
Away back In tho fifties theie vvns a
Shawnee Indian village on tho South
Canadian liver, nbout elghty-flvo miles
west of South McAlester, but the old
village has long since disappeared. On
the spot w here the j'oung Shawnee buck
sang his klovvnla to his dusky maiden
and courted Ills' best girl by the light
of the full moon, only nn occasional
rock hearth und u few graves are left
to Indicate the former hunting grounds
of the red man.
Xetr the old village site now lives a
white mun. Just on the border of this
man's faun Is a spot which seems to
have been the thickest part of tho
Shawnee village, and hero Is a grove
of black oak tiees. In this grove are
two verj' large postoak trees, one In
the fouth and one in the noith end of
the grove. In the grove can be heard
most any daj- buzzing of a swarm of
bees so plainly that the noise has fooled
many old bee hunters, but all their
search has never levelled n single bee.
Now comes the most peculiar part of
this most peculiar tale. The largo post
oak tiee standing at the north end of
the grove Is the cuiloslty of the bunch,
for not long ngo a young man, hearing
of the been, went to tho spot and pro
ceeded to look caiefully up each tteo
In the giove until he cume to the north
ttce. He wus within two feet of this
tree, looking up, when ho heard a noise
Just like a carpenter at work nailing
on boaids, nnd the nolso seemed to
come from the tice. He went around
It several times tijing to locate the
hammering, but it still seemed to come
fiom the tiee. The hammeilng con
tinued until he happened to touch the
tiee with his hand, when It suddenly
stopped. The man then went away
amazed A day or so after this man
had occasion to again pasH that wuj
He slipped up to the tiee and listened,
for the hammering, und, sure enough,
It was as plain as ever. He touched
the tiee with the end of his finger, and,
as before, the noise stopped nt once.
This mon nnd several othets have tried
touching the tiee several times since,
with the s"tme lesult
They sav that the humming ot bees
nnd the curious ham ici lug can be
heard nnj' eln but no one has been
able to explain the nysteiles of this
enchanted grove.
