New York, Feb. 27. Tho market con
tinued very Irregular today, anil left
off lather heavy but with fractional
advances In tho prominent Hhares. Tho
railway shares assumed moro promi
nence In the dealings than of late, Im
portant lluetuatlons occurring from
time to time In those properties during
which tho specialties wero temporarily
reteguted to tho background. Trices
were receding when, toward noon, It
was reported that Agulnnldo was In
clined to accept pacific overtures and
a rally ensued. London was a moder
ate purchusor. A covering movement
In Sugar advanced the price smartly,
but free selling nppenrcd which at
tracted particular attention nnd It was
by brokers who were believed to rep
resent houses prominent on tho bull
side In other stocks, and the stock lost
lis early gain and closed but fraction
ally up for tho day. The grangers wero
In request In the nfternoon, St. Paul
showing u qunrter of a million net In
crease In January. Tho grangers, how
ever, together with the specialties,
sagged during tho late selling move
ment. Tho Philadelphia company rose
over three points on the heavy over
subscription for their bonds offered
this morning. Some hardening In call
money rnte3 accompanied tho late sell
ing movement. Total sales were 815,10(1
tatlng' tone throughout, somu Issues
shares.
The bond market displayed a hesl
fnrging upward, while others felt tho
effects of realizations. Total sales were
$4,590,060.

New York. Pcb. 27. The stock market
opened active and Irregular. The major
ity of the list, however, fallowing slight
advances from Saturday's closing. Bur
lington & Qutncy opened U point up and
advanced gradually until ii gala of -points
had been made. Some of it was
lost, however, In tho gencial recession
of the afternoon. Ontnrlo and Western
was the feature of tho railway stocks al-

The Paclllcs wero fairly active and steady
making slight advances which were main
tained during tho day. The Industrials
were strong and In seme instances showed
considerable gain after the opening. In'
features of this group being the American
Steel and W'lro and Federal Steel stocks.
During tho lalo afternoon realization for
prollts caused a slight recession In valuer
which closed tho market slightly If any
above opening prices. Manhattan was
advanced against the shorts early In the
day but aggressive selling sent the prices
back to about tho opening. The Industrial
Issues Is In our mind, overbought. It is
plainly rigged every morning by nn ad
vance in prices in London nnd in our opin
ion Is likely to sell off sharply before any
reallv sustained udvanco takes place. On
nnv weakness, however, we stroniily ad
vise the purchase of Ontario and Western,
American Steel and Wire. Tin Plato and
Southern Pnclllc. The latter may be slow
to movu and will decline should the mar
ket sell off, but should bo Mifely pin
chased for a very much higher llgure. Wo
know what we nro talking about In regard
to this stock and strongly advise Its pur
chase on all weak spots. Market closed
Irregular but fairly strong. Total sales

IN THE PLAY HOUSES.
Fine Kepertolro Company.
Very much better than the average
repertoire company Is tho Bennett &.
Moulton organization which last night
opened 11 week's engagement at the
Academy of Music by producing "Dark
est Kussln," n highly Interesting com
edy drama In which Nihilists and Rus
sian ofllcers figure conspicuously. Tho
play was not only well acted but stnged
In nn admirable manner.
Some of tho members of the company
whoso work last night was received
with great favor were J. Frank Burke,
Joseph Ilnrrls, James K. Applobee, Jr.,
Arthur Evans, Miss Lora Rogers, Miss
Isabel Pitt Lewis, Miss Beth Sommcr
vllle and Mis-j Dorothy Kent.
A number of vltascope pictures were
shown and very entertaining specialties
by Dan Simons, James F. Kelley and
Dorothy Kent enlivened the perform
ance. Miss Kent is very graceful and
vivacious) nnd her songs nnd dnneesi
with Mr. Kelley last night were tho
best things of the kind seen on tho
Academy stage this season.
This afternoon the company will bo
seen In "My Partner" and tonight In
"A Daughter of the South."
"The Darktown Swells."
A' the Gnlety yesterday '"The Dark
town Swells" began a three-days' en
gagement. The company Is made up
entirely of colored artists, who give n
very satisfactory performance. The
show opens with a regulation minstrel
first part In which the men and wo
men of the company participate. Sev
eral well-rendered vocal numbers were
given In this part.
Then came the olio which Is one of
the strong features of the show. Gusslo
Mines sang several Illustrated songs
which was followed by a real colored
cake walk. Kate Neal and Gusslo
Mines sang nnd danced well. Others
who had numbers on the programme
were James Williams, Bob Tasker and
Johnson nnd Clssel.
Some beautiful views were exhibited
by means of the stereopticon and the
performance closed with a farce "Take
Your Clothes nnd Go." It will be re
peated this nnd tomorrow afternoons
and evenings.
"A Milk White Ping."
Hoyt's "A .Milk White Flag," which
is a burlesque on the militia In a
bright play full of gay music, graceful
dances and pretty girls, comes to tho
Lyceum Thursday night nnd It Is need
less to say that there will be a full
house. The play has met with signal
success everywhere and those who de
sire seats had better get them early
so as to avoid the rush.
Mile. Ani's Merry Monarchs.
A gte.tt big bunch of pretty girls and

"This rolo enables him to give a
