Our Democratic friends would seem
to be counting their chickens before
they are hatehed, as there promises to
be some ory interesting nurprlses In
store for them on the morning after
election, for th"re Is n growing senti
ment amongst hundreds of well think
ing people who are both taxpayers and
oters, that those who run for the of-th-eH
of eouiiellinen and school director.?
who turn things upside down to obtain
these ofllces must bo rat upon, -uid
men elected who would not stoop to
such measures as are practiced by
some of those who are now In office,
and wish to be ie-eleeted.

company who filled their ilirit engage
nifiU in this part of the stao- last
week, left for Columbia yesteiday, but
will return to Wllkes-Rarro and .Scran
ton the latter part of next month.
During their visit hero they made hosts
of friends, not alone by their ability
to successfully entertnln a public au
dience, but In their refined manners
and general deportment. A fact which
was fully verified at several social
events which took place (luring tho
week. U. T- Mitchell Is tho excellent
manager, while M!n Una Clayton and
Francis Murey are the bright partic
ular stars, whoso accomplishments are
larely seen In repertoire companies.
This evening the Urosnahan-.Iack.

Ilev. K. Van Hoesen, of Avocu, made
an excellent address to young men yes
terday atternoon at the rooms of the
Young MonV Christian association and
the vocal duet by the Heard sisters
was a valuable assistance to the ser
vices. The large attendance would In
dicate that there is a growing Interest
taken in these weekly meetings by the
young men and many of the older ones,
and that the efforts of the management
of this worthy Institution Is being ap
preciated. A fire which occurred in Smlthvllle
on Saturday morning destroyed three
houses. The main structure was owned
by Victor Mnntlbella and was Insured

"Tho Governors " Are Entertaining
Ward nnd Vokes and a number of
clover assistants gave a very mirth
provoking entertainment at the Ly
ceum Saturday afternoon and evening.
"The Governors," tho farce comedy
which the company presented, has no
particular clalniH to distinction. It
merely affords nn opportunity for Ward
remarkably bright lot of them were
presented too.
Ward and Vokes have been warm fa
vorites in Scranton for several seasons
nnd their popularity suffered nothing
by their work Saturday. To those who
merely want to be entertained or who
have tired of the serious drama "The
Governors" are recommended. Thoy
cure that tired feeling.
