Favor Continuanoe of Extra
ordinary Foreign Trade.
New Yoik, Jan. 1:0 It. O Dun and
Co.'s weekly ielew of ttnde will say
tomottow:
A new year iaiel opens billllnntly.
Too many trudeis have to wait for the
demand which In the winter tomes
slowly. But the Induslikw leslst fair
ly well the tendency to unlimited ex
pansion which some have to meet. Spec
ulation In pioducts Is gaining, but lit
tle, w hllu In stocks an enoi mom olunic
of business itsults continually In high
er pi Ices. The volume of payments
thiottgh clearing houses la extraordln
aiy, 42.7 per cent, l.nger than last year,
9t 9 per cent, larger than 1S97 and 61.1
per cent, laiger than lil1-', even the
tiunsnctlous outbids: of New York
showing a gain over 1S92 of 416 per
cent. Speculation at New Yoik theie
fore cannot be the main cause of gain.
Difficulties between holders of material
and manufacture continue to hinder In
some Industiles and It may In some
way ptove seilously embairasslng, but
the activity on the whole la unsui pass
ed hitherto, and the volume of tiaflc
la beyond all expectations.
In some branches consumption is run
ning beyond the producing capacity,
but In others It Is hlndeicd by doubts
about the futuio supplies and pikes of
materials.
The woolen manufnetuter Is still
watting with only a modeiate demand
for goods as yet. The production Is
large and considerably larger than in
recent yeais, but does nut nearly a
proach the capacity of the mills. Sales
of wool for the past three weeks at
three chief eastern maikets have been
16,495,800 pounds against 223,322,970 last
ear, and prices of domestic fleece are
lower with present demands running
largely to quarter and half bloods and
Australian cross bred. But theie Is
not enough change In material or in
demand for goods to encourage he ivy
buying by manufacturers as yet. The
cotton manufacturer has a laige de
mand for goods, but raw cotton has
.so rapidly advanced that possible buy
ers apprehend a fall and there is hes
itation In the purchases of staples.
With lectflpta of cotton far ahead of
last year's fiom the greatest crop then
ever raised, theie Is no apprehension
that good qualities may fall short be
foie the j ear closes. Cotton remains
111 the fields yt't unpicked, owing to tho
bad weathei and It Is deteriorating in
quullu. The silk manufacturing, not
withstanding manv thieats of interfer
enee and disputes about duties, seems
to be making stcadj piogiess
IN IRON AND STKKL.
The iion and steel manufacturer
lead.i all otheis In the volume of new
buslnes-T. While production Is much
the laigest ever known, many of the
woiks ate withdrawing all quotations
ir ii'iming prohibitory prices In order
to chock ordeis which they ennnot fill
for months to come nnd do not want
to accept at current prices Tho num
ber of such wrrks If rapidly Increasing
as the heavy demand for materials
covers many months' capacity. Besse
mer pig Is a shade higher at $10.90 with
sales of 25,030 tons at Pittsburg and
there is something liko a famine In
grey forge, with sales at $9.75, although
one salo at $9.93 In the valley la re
ported. While finished products are
In ery great demand, especially for
car building and ship works at the
west the week shows no advance in
prices excepting E0 cents per ton in
steel rails at the east.
These conditions favor continuance of
the extraordinary foreign tiade which
resulted In the greatest balanco In fa
vor of this country ever known. Janu
ary reports thus far Indicate a similar
excess of exports over Imports, and
while wheat exports have Iro leased
every month since last August they
have been In thrco weeks lr,07S,077
bushels, flour Included.from both coasts
against 111,899,952 bushels last year.
Corn exports have been quite up to
last j ear's unprecedented record,
amounting to 9,r09,S99 bushels against
9,270,1S9 for threo weeks of January
last year. Although prices have de
clined about 4 cent, the contest be
tween speculators In wheat at Uie west
and at the east has held rrlces faiily
steady with an ndv-wco of only an
eighth for tho week. Cotton fell to C
cents, but afterwards rose to 6.1 2, with
out satisfactory reason in leading, but
because of apprehension that supplies
of good quality might fall bhort.
Failures for the week have been 213
In tho United States against 374 last
year, and 32 In Canada against D3 last
year.
IN THE PLAY HOUSES.
"Cyrano do Bergerac."
Scranton theater-goers will seo In
Cyrano de Bergerac, the most striking
and remarkable production of tho
season, and the verlson of tho play
that will be piesented at tho Lyceum
theater this afternoon and evening,
has been pronounced by critics to be
tho superior of any orison thus far
presented. Tho Cyrano that comes to
the Lyceum theater Is that of Henry
I.oe, one of the most successful and
popular character actors of the Ameri

as Interesting a gentleman as Cyrano,
though ho has killed less people and
has no abnounal nose off tho btage.
He has traveled and acted all over tho
world. Like all that Is truly great tin
the stage, Cyrano de Bergerac comes

his braveiy nnd his all-around clever

and misshapen that to see It as to
laugh: to laugh was to be challenged
to a duel by thp picptietor of the nose,
nnd to duel with lum wns to be killed
Duelling was so eisv to him that ho
composed poetry while- lighting a duel
on one occasion. Gieat as lie was in
his day, Cyrano slumbeied In the foggy
mists of history till last summer, when
a young Trench playwilght named
Rostand mado him the heio of a story,
and later of a play. He Idwillod tl'w
