New York, Jan. 17. The changes In
stock quotations for the day were unim
portant. Tho rrarket showed strength
nuw of the day and repeated efforts mi
the part of the bears to depress pi Ices al
though assisted by sales of some 30,000
shares of stock for London account were
of little avail and prices worked upward
generally until the last hour, when pre
vious gains of tho day were practically
wiped out. The highest prices of the ilny
were made about noon, the standard
shales showing handsome gains. Total
sales were 710,700 shares.
