The street fairs are held yearly and In some placet from three to five days, more Interest being taken tu these annual occur rences than In many of ;he country fulrs. Owing to this company having to reach Cincinnati, Ohio, Sundny night, they will close their engagement at the Galetv theatre tomorrow (Fri day) night. There will ho a special matinee today and tomorrow. The Village Postmaster. A beautiful rural drama that the New York papers were so enthusiastic over, has closed Its long run there. And were It not for previous contracts made by the management of tho Fourteenth street theatre this beautiful play of New F-ngland plcturesquo life could, like tho brook, have run on forever. Some of tho city writers grow poetical and said that the play was like a beau tiful rose culled from a mossy bank be side a running stream. So many beau tiful and truthful things have been said about this rural drama that our space forbids uh going Into uny lengthy notice, but wo will add that If all the New York presti has Bald Is true, then our renders who are theatre-goers have indeed a treat In store for them. "The Village Postmaster" will appear at the Lyceum theatro for two per. formances, matinee nn-l nlnht, Jan. 7. It will be the saino company with the same ucenery with which It wus glvan ilui'lni' ! For two yenrs past It has been playing In Kng land where It wus received with dem onstrative approval by press and pub lic. The play Is a pleasure mixture In which comedy nltcrnatcs with the pathos. It Is full of clever dramatic situations, and the Interest Is quickly developed and ndmlrably sustained. The Incidents are led up to naturally nnd the dialogue expresses sentiments aptly In keeping with the situations. Tho company Is said to be of uniform excellence. Cable Companies File Claims. Washington, Jan. 4. Another dlsagrce nblo consequenco of the lato war has been tho presentation to tho government of claims of cublo companies for damages sustained through tho suspension of their business by the United States military nnd naval forces. What the nggrcgato amount of these claims will bo cannot bo foretold. Tho companies In each caso base their claims upon the number of days of Interruption to business. THE MARKETS. Wall Street Review. New York, Jan. 4. Stock were reac tionary In tho forenoon ami forged strong ly upwards In the afternoon, led by high priced specialties. Including Brooklyn Transit, Sugar and Tobacco. The opening was Irregular with a tendency both here nnd In London to tnka proilts, and prices 1 (acted moderately after the Initial trad ing. Professional traders sougkht dili gently to reach stop loss orders. Many shares cased off considerably but a nuin bc of stocks showed marked resistance. A better tone developed In the nftoinoon and continued untl the close. While thero were largo gains In many cases and tho closo was strong, the ndvnnco In stand ard shares was generally moderate. Tho rise In wheat stimulated Interest in many of tho western railway shares. Tho nd vnnco of points in American Tobacco was unaccompanied by any now devel opments In tho property. Thero were lsrgo purchases by Interests Identified with tho company and tho movement was thought to bo manipulation ngalnst the short interest which has recently been created bv tho formation of rival concerns. The Heading stocks wcro pressed for sale In the early hours and declined sharply. Tho shares failed to respond to the subsequent general show of strenth. Total sales wore 730,700 shares.
