Showing Other Games Played on
Saturday.
After years of steady defeat Har
vard lit last won her big game tills
year, defeating University of Pcnnsyl
Minla nt Cambridge, Saturday, by a
Mcore of 10 to D. It was a great game
throughout and wan witnessed by 16,
(J00 spectators. Harvard's tcum was
nldcd much towards lctory by good
luck, but It conccdcdly placed tho
nuperlor game. Pennylv aula's ends
wero only oidlnaiy. while Hamuli's
men In those positions played superb
ball, Ponn'n kicking was poor, bur
bucks fumbled wretchedly and her
tilcks piovcd boomerangs.
In tbu line the honors wcie ubuut
even, although Hurvard had the most
beef. Tho CilniMin tuckles had a little
iho best of It, but this was evened up
by the btllllant wotk of Hate, Over
Held and McCraeken, tho central ttlo
for l'enn. Hare was the star player of
the day, with Daly, Harvard's why
little quarterback, a good second for
liitllvldu.il hotmirt Captain Dibble did
not play his usual star game.
The Hist Hiore was made befoio the
game was quaiter of a minute old.
Coombs missed Harvard's kick-off and
Donald picking up tho bounding ball on
a run, made a headlong dive across the
line. Instead of disheartening Penn
sylvania the tluko only made her men
desperate and they went at Harvard's
line like demon". In the matter of clear
ground gaining the Quakers belted
their opponents, but everything they
gained In this leaped was lost by poor
handling of the bull. Harvard, too,
made successful standi at ciltknl
times, in seven al Instances holding
Penn for four downs, after the Quaker's
battel lug-nun, guatd's-baik formation
bad can led the ball thlity or foity
yards.
I'enn tried u field goal, but missed by
it foot. Harvaid's second svoie wnh on
r beautiful lorty-llve uul placement
goal frnm the Held, Bennett making the
kick. It will go down In foot ball his
toiy as one of the piettlest kicks on
lecoid.
Cadets Tie the Tigeis.
Princeton was as good as defeated
at West Point by allowing the Cadets
to tie them. The Tigeis' line was
pierced at will by the Cadets' backs
and Aycis was greatly outclassed at
kicking by Romoyn Tho Cadets, bv
making the most of this advantage and
through the penalizing of the Tigers'
far off-side play nnd othei faults, at
riltirul times, won their equivalent of
ii victoiy.
Piinceton scored a touchdown in the
llrst half, but ml'ed tho goal. Ito
meyn made a successful place kick to
wuids tl'e end of the second half nnd
tied the score.
Cornell Plays Well.
Corns 11 ida yd 'Williams at Buftolo in
a lain storm, scoring 12 points and pie
ventlng tho Berkshire bids fioin even
getting dangnousiy near their goal.
It was the muddj Held, and fumbles
due to the slippery ball that Kept Cor
nell's scene so low.
Blue's Poor Showing.
Yalo also plaed a disappointing
game agaln-t the Chicago Athletic dub
nt New Haven making only u touch
down and a plate kick Fumbling,
lugged play and mlsetable tackling
chuiacterlicd YoIo'h gume throughout,
Theio was n total lack of team vvnik
and not miuh that was btllllant In In
dividual plaing. Any tlist-class team
could have piled up a big score against
them.

BEARS ARE CURIOUS.
They Bite off the Insulators from
Telegiaph Poles.
Prom tho Augusta (Mi ) .Tout ml
The bears in Noithern Maine 10111
blne a gic.it love for Hie ci.ib nmMc-ts
which are giown In that region with
Ignorance of the appliances of modern
civilization. When a telegraph com
pan started to put up poles In the
woods between Ashland and Port Kent
the simple-minded beais began to sniff
at the tall sticks with suspicion, evi
dently mistaking them for some new-
form of deadfall that wus erected for
the special pmposo of killing heats.
They stayed away trom the camps ot
the workmen nil the time the imile was
being surveyed and while the poles
wcie going up. lefuslng to lespond to1
tho luring odors of scorched fat poik
or buined molasses. Hut when the glass
insulatois wcie screwed to the long
aims of the poles every bear In North
em Aroostook came out to watch tho
progress of the work.
Although tin superintendent of the
job pronounced the line completed and
leudy for tvrvico a month ago, tho
company has been unable to pioeuie
the transmission of messages through
tho long btilp of woods above Ashland.
A double force of linemen is kept at
woik all the time, but In spite of their
labors the Insulatois ate pulled off and
broken na often that no communication
can be kept up for thiee houis in suc
cesion. The company hlieel detectives
and offered laige lewaids foi the cap
ture of malicious men caught injui lnr
the Insulators. As this proved useless,
the detectives finally went into tho
woods and found tho whole line swarm
ing with bears that climbed the poles
nnd bit off tho insulators faster than
the linemen could renew them.
Tho only way tho telegraph men can
account for this perverted tabtu on the
part of the bears Is that the animals
believe the insulators aio their favoilto
crab apples, and they had gone nloft
and inaele actual pi oof. The tolcgiaph
line s will oppaiently be able to do no
business until eveiy beni In Aioostool;
county has thus satisfied himself.
