The SIsteis of the Good Shepherd ex
tend their arms to tho unhappy victim ot
ciinie; they call not thu Just but sinners
to repentance. Tlnllr noble work of chnr
lt Is not eonllned to the members of a
particular faith or denomination. They
labor upon a principle as comprehensive
as humanity; the Jew, tho Gentile, Prot
estant and Catholic are all bonctlclurlea
ot their elevating Influence. No distinc
tion of religious belief, no enormity of
crime, no degreo of human degradation
can deter theso good, faithful worker? for
the elevation of humanity from fulfilling
thu noblo and sublime destiny for which
the older wns Instituted.
'j hey feel that It Is their divine mission
under tlio guldaire of a truly Christian
impulse to instruct tho Ignorant, cure tho
sick, clotho the poor, redeem the fallen,
and to enable the unfortunate who are
committed to their care to begin anew
the battle of life, repentant.
Where a man In tho hlght of a wliolo
nation under the eyes of admiring friends
and devoted relatives sacrlllccs himself
for his native land, ho exchanges a few
ilu8 of life for ages of glory; ho sheds
lustie upon his family and raises It to
wealth und honor. Hut tho devoted sls
t i;i of (he Good Shepherd whoso lives
are spent In the recesses of tho cloister,
and who work faithfully, silently and
unobtrusively for the most unfortunate
of womankind, make greater and nobler
sacrlllces without tho encouragement of
Ept-ctators, without public applause, anu
without any hope or reward In this llto
other than consciousness of duty, faith
fully and religiously performed.
In tho performance of these pious duties
they find no consolation but in the teach
ings of Christ, nnd no encouragement
but in the hope of nn eternal reward In
the llfo to come.
And the platers' labor Is a public beno
factlon. I'nfortunate of nil religious de
nominations nre committed to their care
by our courts, and the stato does not'eon
trlbue one cent toward the support of the
fallen ones who would otherwise become
charges upon the public, In our prisons
und Jails. Yet these unfortunates com
mitted to this institution by the mandate
of the law reiutlro food, clothing, medi
cines and necessaries of llfo for their
support and comfort. Tho demand for ar
ticles manufactured at the home lias dc
ct caned recently and for three months
tho Institution has been deprived of its
earning power to a conslderablo extent.
Tho ounvnt expenses nggregato $900 per
month. The earning power of tho liwti-tiil'.-ii
Is about S300 per month, and tlio
public Is most earnestly requested to con
tribute In mouev, clothing nnd medicines
what Is necessary to enable these good
sisters to carry on tho great work of
charity. In order that all wtyo feci dis
posed to assist may have an opportunity
to do so, Thursday and Friday. November
3 and I, nre fixed as donation days at the
Homo of the Good Shepherd.
All contributions will be acceptable,
monev, food, clothing, medicines, nnd It
Is earnestly liopul that the response by
an appreciative public In contributions to
this worthy public (luirlty will he gener
