BUSINESS STANDS
STORMS OF WAR
XT IS PASSING WELL THROUGH
DIFFICULTIES OF WIND UP.
!&. Bush of Orders That Can Scarcely
Continue for Any Length of Time.
Trade of tho Entlrp Country Ex
pands Whiai Advances Activity
nt the Iron Works.
New York, Sept. 16. H. G. Dun &
Co., In their Weekly Review of Tratle,
will Bay tomorrow:
Business Is passing well through the
difficulties that attend tho winding up
of ft vnrK which are generally greater
than those involved whllo war Is In
progress. Tho rush of orders kept back
while war lasted, by those who thought
It shrewd not to take any chances, has
lifted prices a little and cnused a larger
demand for the time than can continue,
hut though It has passed, there Is
nmple evidence that the consuming de
mand Is ery huge. How largo can
only be Judged after some weeks of
waiting, hut It looks as If those who
wait longest are likely to pay most.
The business of the country Is expand
ing so that payments through clearing
houses In tho s-econd week of Septem
ber were 22.G per cent, larger than In
1802. nnd for two weeks 12.0 per cent,
larger. From these and railway re
turns, and such trade reports ns are
Instructive, It must be concluded that
much more business Is being done than
In the best of past cais, though not
ahos with much profit.
Wheat has come foiward much more
freely, and the pilco has advanced two
cents, it Is supposed that the advance
Is laigely due to milling demand com
ing upon a mirmw tupply. Exports arc
large, 3 007,876 bushels, (lour Included,
from Atlantic and 201,052 bushels from
Pacific poits, nnd for two weeks, fi,697,
320 bushels from both coabts ugalnst
lO.iOli.SS last year. Receipts of wheat
for two weeks of September have been
ll.GB0,S05 bushels against 14,697,106 last
ear. The foiclgn demand will be
smaller and the American crops larger
than last jcar.
IN 1HON TRADE.
With the starting of nineteen fur
naces. Idle n month ugo, paitly not In
cluded as jet, the weekly output Sept.
1 was 213,041 tons against 206,777 Aug.
1, and the drcicase In stocks 116,929
tons In two months, Indicates a con
sumption but little below a million
tons per month, Sttuctural work Is the
heaviest ever known nt Pittsburg,
though smaller than last year at New
York. Bar mills are crowded, w Ith the
general railway demand for automatic
couplers and orders for new cars, SOO
for one road and a large order for
street cars to Japan, and plate mills
nro everywhere crowded. The demand
for pipe Is tho largest for a long time,
and also for holler tubes, nnd the sheet
mills are crowded west of Philadelphia,
while the foundry consumption Is
heavy, and the rail mills are not ready
to accept orders which they cannot de
liver for months, being engaged far
ahead.
Fnlluies for the week are 181 In the
United States against 201 last ear and
23 In Canada against 40 last year.

though there wero'ono or two sharp ral
