SOUTH SCRANTON.
Mrs. Barrett, of Anthracite street,
near the city line, has been made ex
ceedingly happy by the receipt of a
letter from her son, Thomas Barrett,
whom she has mourned as dead since
August 3 last. The letter from her son,
who Is a member of the Twenty-first
regiment of the regulars, was jocelved
Tuesday. He was with his command
at Santiago. In tho list of men having
died from fecr there was a Thomas
Barrett and Mrs. Barictt thoucht It
was her son. Barrett Is now In a New
York city hospital nnd Is expected
home soon.
The wagon of the Century Hose com
pany was Injured yesterday when Per
manent man Knellar was responding
to the alarm from Box 12. One of the
heavy springs became loosened. The
damage was not serious, but prevented
the company from going to the scene
of the fire. Men from Conrad Piel'i
wagon shop repaired the spring.

As the nuptial ceremony was performed
tho couple stood beneath a canopy of

as officiating minister. He Is a brother-in-law
of the groom. The bildo was
attired In a beautiful rostume of white
organdie over pale blue bilk. Mrs. D.
B. Thomas plajed the wedding mar
ches. At tho conclusion of tho ceremony a
reception wns held nnd all sat down
to a wedding dinner. Mr. Jones was
assisted In serving by Mrs. Charles La
Bar and Miss JIary Davis. Later Mr.
and Mi Rlvonberg departed on a
short wedding tour to Delawaie Water
Onp nnd thence to Hlghtstown, N. J.,
whore they will heieafter reside.
The btlde Is a well known and pop
ular joung lady. For several years
she has been acthely connected with
the First Welsh Baptist church nnd the
Bellevue Mission Sabbath school. She
Is gifted with a charming personality
and enjoys, a wide circle of friends.
Prof. Rlvonberg Is n member of the
faculty of the Hldle Institute, of
Hlghtstown, N. J., and Is lnstiuctor In
the languages.

FELL DOWN STAIRS.
John J. Lewis, of 417 Fifteenth
street, Is lying In a precarious con
dition at his residence, suffering from
concussion of tho brain ns tho direct
result of n fall lato last Tues
day evening. Ho has not yet
regained consciousness though appar
ently In good condition otherwise.
Everything that medical skill could
suggest has been tried thus far with
out avail.
Mr. Lewis Is an elderly man, but of
good, rugged constitution and his vi
tality will bo of great benefit to him.
Tho accident happened In a very pe
culiar manner. He nnd his wife had
retired ns usual. Later Mrs. Lewis,
who was not well, usked her husband
to get her a glass of Ice water. Ho
got out of bed to go down stairs to the
refrigerator. Just as he left the stair
head ho tripped nnd pitched forward.
Ho struck upon his head nenr tho
bottom and io great was the fall that
tho steps were literally shattered. Con
cussion of the brain resulted Imme
diately. Mr. Lewis Is undtr tho caro
of the family physician and his return
to consciousness Is anxiously awaited
by the family.
VICIOUS CANINE SHOT.

Sumner avenue, near the residence of
the Johnsons, i cached Day Patrolman
Thomas Collins yesterday morning at
the police station. Ho was requested
to come up and shoot the dog.
In nccoi dance with the request tho
pntrolman went up and found thnt the
dog was a large one and was certain
ly behaving strangely. Two shots well
placed ended the dangerous actions
and later the carcass was taken away
and bulled. It seems that the dog
came to this vlclnltv several day3 ago
and Just hung around. Wednesday, ho
began to snap at anyone who happen
ed to pass near him and yesterday be
came ery vicious. Tho animal may
hnvc been only suffering from sick
ness or poison.
FUNERAL Or A SOLDIER.
The last tiibuto of respect and honor
will be paid to a soldier hero today
when the funeral services for the late
Silvester Deitrick will be held thl3
morning nt 10 o'clock nt the residence,

David Edwards, of the West Side,
had a narrow escape from death In the
West Ridge colliery mine yesterday
morning. lie wns about to sprag an
empty trip when It Jumped the track,
dragging him to the ground. Work
men who rushed to his assistance
nt first thought ho was Jammed to
death between the cars. He was
wedged beneath them and It was with
much difficulty that he was extricated.
His escape was fortunate, ho having
sevcial contusions about the head and
neck and his chest wus severely
bruised.
BASKET BALL.
Tho local basket ball team are mak
ing extensive preparations for the com
ing scabon. Good games arc promised
as engagements have been mado with
tho best teams and tho dates have been
nrranged. They will be played every
two weeks in company H armory. Sep
tember 12 opens tho season with tho
strong South Side team. Tho line up
of the Stars will be as follows: right
forward, Robert Connolly; center, Wil
liam Davis; left forward. John Skiff;

BURGLARS AGAIN.
Suspicious characters evidently in
tended to burglarize tho residence of
B. B. Atherton, on North Main avenue,
Monday, but were thwatted In their
purpose by Mr. Atherton. A rattling
of the rear shutter drew his attention
to something unusal. Ho hurriedly
rushed to the window but the invad
ers saw him coming nnd ran. Mr.
Atherton followed the sounding of the
footsteps on the pathwalk which
reaches to tho rear of his property.
Ho was Just In time to see the two
fleeing figures of men going down the
Ontario and Western tracks. As fur
ther pursuit was futile both made their
escape.

Miss Edith Jones was the reclrtent
of a pleasant surprise party at her
homo on Deacon street last evening.
Entertaining diversions consisting of
music both Instrumental and ocal,
and games wero indulged In until a
seasonable hour when refreshments
were served.
A party of friends Invaded the home
of Miss Margaret Hopkins, of West
Market street, last evening and made
the hours merry In games and other
pleasing diversions. Miss Hopkins
proved an efficient host. Refreshments

was active In Masonry. He was a mem
