Special to tho Scrnnton Tribune, .yv&ustiuehanrm, Aug. 30. A few days ejnev, Farmer Wentvvorth, residing near Sherman, while on his way to ills oat field noticed something pro truding from the ground. Upon exam ination it proved to be a huge bone, and, curious because of Its abnormal nlze, he carefully removed tho sur it rounding earth. It was a mammoth n tusk, nine feet, four Inches long and twenty-five Inches in circumference. -ryijlouBly enough, two front bones of vJiVmastedon were, found near tho same ftpot eight years ago. The tusk Is prob nbly from the same skeleton. It .Is wuppoied that mnstedons were found In this section during the glacial per iod. NARROW ESCAPK FOR A SOCIETY "Whitney is hugging himself and chuckling because, living In Susque hanna, our Good Citizen's league can't touch him. Hallstead Herald. IN OLD SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY. The Susquehanna association of Uni versalis will meet in Gibson on Wed nesday and Thursday. The Scranton annual reunion of the Lewis family will be held at Riverside park, Lanesboro, September 3. The Susquehanna County Pomona Grange will hold its next quarterly meeting at Falrdale, Sept. 7, S. Burglars seldom tackle Ararat. Everything up there is too high for them to reach. The patrons of husbandry of the county will hold Its annual picnic to day at Heart Lake. The annual jeunlon of the Whitney ramlly will be held on AVednesday, at the home of J. L. Whitney, in Lenox township. There was a great crowd at the Dlm ock camp meeting on Sunday. THE BULLDOG CAUGHT THE FISH A few mornings since Jack Dodge and his dog, of Starucca, were hunt ing on the banks of the Starucca creek when suddenly the dog stood at atten tion and then made n mad dash Into the water and grabbed a large fish In his teeth. The fish ad the dog fought for fully five minutes, the fish getting away from his captor twice. Dodge encouraged the dog by shouting at him to hold on and finally the dog crawled out of the water with the fish In his mouth a proud conqueror. Tho finny denizen was a carp which had worked Its way out of a carp pond. It weighed eleven pounds. WHOLLY UNPREMEDITATED. "O summer day, thou art too brief, Thy frogs of song, thy rose and leaf, Too soon lead in to autumn's goal, E're we have saved the cash for coal." And the poor reconcentiadoes, what has become of them? Marriage is a preventative of crime, says the jSTe York Sun. And so Is death. An exchange wisely remarks: "With some people the smaller the founda tion for it tho greater the bustle." This will do for philosophy. It might be mistaken for a fashion note. A county newspaper wants to know if hell is a place. What difference does It make if it isn't? Tho jumping tooth ache Is not a place, but who wants it for 2,000,000 years? The problem of life how to make one fellow do the work of two. There Is no limit to the age at which man may make a fool of hlimelf. in matters of love. The real hero of the war Is the man who filled any place in which ho was assigned, high or low, Important or un Importanf, and filled It faithfully that Is the real herd of the war. SOME OF OUR FRIENDS. Hon. Galusha A. Grow Is at hla home In Glenwood. Messrs. John Francis McDonald and Colonel Miquelo D. Moran, distin guished citizens of Carbondale, were much In evidence In Susquehanna on Friday. Both were searching for cus toms the latter for hard ones. It is whispered that Jefferson divi sion Train Dispatcher Purtell, of Car bondale, may become general superin tendent of! the Jefferson Park and Fiddle Lake railroad. The duties would be Just about onerous enough to suit the tastes of John D. Attorney McKInney and Mr. Cun ningham, prominent residents of For est City Joined the Erie's Jefferson branch excursion to Blnghamton on Sunday. The barrister acted as chap erone to Mr. Cunningham, and from the platform of tho rear car pointed out the hlstorlo spots en route, in cluding McKunes, where the Mormon Bible was translated, Smoky Hollow and Red Rock. At McKunes Mr. Cun ningham desired to leave the train end shed a few tears at the grave of Joseph Smith, but Mr. McKInney said that the phophet wns buried at Nau oo, Illinois, and finally succeeded in keeping his friend upon the train. It was a great disappointment to Mr. Cunningham. A delegation of our cltlrens, accom panied by tho Susquehanna band, on Thursday evening tendered Mr. C. Fred Wright, tho popular Republican candidate for congress, tho compli ment of a serenade, Mr. Wright will receive a srVenaid majority. Ho is tho most popular where ho Is tho best known. That's compliment enough for nny man. Senator Hardcnbergh will receive nn old-time majority In Susquehanna county, where ho has nlwas been popular. His record in both branches of tho legislature has been one of which any man may well be proud. Ho has dono well by Susquehnnna county, and our people will show their appre ciation at the proper time. A Susquehanna county young man, who was recently about to die, willed his bcthrothed to his best friend, a young mnn of the neighborhood. Tho young lady was pleased with tho ar rangement, and nil is serene. Queer world, brethren! OTHER BRIEF MENTIONETTES. Congressman Amos J. Cummlngs Is still at Columbian Grove. Ho spends about eight hours per day In a boat, luring big bass from the placid waters of the Susquehanna. The Tunkhannock, Nicholson nnd Lanesboro railroad is n. long time a horning. Good things come slow. About the most plentiful things in Susquehanna county nowadays are family reunions, camp meetings and candidates for county offices. Two Susquehanna county newspapers are said to be for sale. Here Is a chance to get rich without going to tho Klondike. Our 'Prohibition friends claim that they w 111 w age "an aggressive warfare" whatever that may be. The firm faith and persistency of our Prohibi tion brethren Is certainly refreshing. A nearby physician recently pre bcrlbed a bath for a young woman, who had been ery seriously 111 for several weeks. The patient was bath ed, and the next day she wns gathered to her fathers. The mother of tho departed, a few days later, relating the sad circumstance to sympathizing friends said: "Well, of course, I don't know, nnd I don't try to think that everything Is for the best, but some times I cannot help thinking that if Eliza Jane hadn't taken that bath she would be alive today. You know our sort of folks ain't used to 'em!" And so the world wags on' Whitney. . ,1 . 1 1 1 1 IN THE PLAY HOUSES. Forever Devil's Auction. Today's stock mnrkct was quiet nnd remarkablo for the llstnessncss and heaviness of tho stand atd securities us it was for tho animation and strength of a number of specialties. Tho Grangers, Union Pacific, Atchison, prcforrcd, Brooklyn Transit, Sugar and most of tho railway shares wero scml stagnant all day and moBt of them closed at small not losses and without side Muc tuatlons for tho day of only a small frac tion.
