THIS AND THAT.
Of the few popular and accessible
country resorts near Scranton. Lake
Ariel has probably been the most gen
erously patronized by private and fam
ily parties during the recent hot
weather. For pome time vacant rooms,
at either the Lake House or Hotel
I'lnes, have been the exception rather
than the rule. The latter establish
ment, managed under the personal di
rection of Charles H. Schadt nnd his
assistant, A. J. Duffy, has become the
social headquarters at the lake for
those who do not occupy cottages
there.
There was a progressive euchre party,
arranged by the ladles at the hotel,
Tuesday night. Mrs. Dr. Hoxsle, of
Brooklyn, N. Y.. nnd Mrs. M. E. Mc
Donald, of Scranton, respectively, won
the first and second ladies' prizes, and
Mr. John Mccormick, of Brooklyn, N.
Y., and Mr. H. W. Custer, of Kaston.
the gentlemen's prizes. On the follow
ing night and Saturday night tho
usual semi-weekly dances for the hotel
guests and cottagers were given In the
big pavilion on tho picnic grounds.
The music was by Mr. and Mrs. C. C.
Conrad and P. H. Widmayer, of
Scranton. On Thursday night Mrs.
Joseph C. O'Brien gave a brief and In
formal vocal recital which delightfully
entertained an appreciative gathering
at the Hotel Pines.

A party of twelve or fifteen small
boys returning from Nay Aug Park
created considerable disturbance last
evening about 6.30 on their way down
Mulberry stret. Arming themselves
with sticks purloined from n lumber
pile along the way, they proceeded to
bent tattooes on the fence." and make
a terrific racket. The disturbance, how
ever, consisted largely In their leaping
Into front yards and turning on all the
water faucets as they went.
As It was about tea tlme.thclr pranks
were not discovered In time for per
sonal chastisement, but there was a
row of bare-headed nnd Irate residents
visible most nt the distance from Clay
to Jefferson avenue engaged In turning
off the water that was generally Hood
ing the pavements. Tho ugility of the
gamins precluded a chase, but as the
latter reached the vicinity of tho city
hall suddenly the silence became pain
ful and their vociferation was changed
to breathless flight as a' blue-coat ap
peared leisurely from the court. Such
a gnncral scattering caused much
amusement to the spectators.
Nathan I). Moyer, of Rethlehcm, an
engineer employed on the Rath divis

while going along tho road at a lively

Bangor Superior quart y, ho noticed an
object lying on the track between tho

and by uMng every effort succeeded 1n
