THE MARKETS.
Wall Street Itnvloiv.
New York, July 1!. There was a not
able disparity nguln today In tho nctlvitr
of tho bond and stock market, tho volume
ot transactions In the bona muruei cut
tinning on a very largo scale while the
stock market was dull throughout, m
the early trading A.tchlson preferred con
tinued conspicuous and absorbed In very
large Individual stocks. The demand for
tills stock diminished beforo tho close,
thus removing tho only movement of pos
itive strength In tho market, which drop
ped on a small volume of business. Tho
declines wero most conspicuous In tho
stocks which wero advanced under man
ipulation last week, notably Omaha and
Northwest. There Is nn effort to explain
thu diversion ot speculative activity trom
the stock market to tho bond market on
the ground that the now revenue law pro
vides no tax on the sale of bonds, al
though stock sales are taxed at the rate,
of J2 per 100 shares. Almost InllnlteslmnI
tax does In fnct loom largo In
the eyes of tho professional room
trades. who buy and sell stocks
for a small fractional turn on tho floor
ot the exchange. Hut this class of trans
actions makes up but a small proportion
of the total In an active market. Total
sales were 24S.000 shares.
