Key West, May 15. The cable olllco In Key West, since the world became Interested In war tnl', has been the most Interesting Bpot on the Island, nnd the mnt Intel estlng nnd the most Im poitnnt man is the censor. The cable olllco Is a small bllck building, two stories high, with a lnige cneounut palm grow luff on either side. The palms spioad their Rre.it branches anove the building nnd form a perfect nich over the red tiled jloor. Oreat lust(is of enconnuts ni suspended from the gioon nrch and all day swing and ru-tle In the swarthy leaves vvhen c.er the luzy sottth wind comes up from the harl or It is only a few yards from the door of the cable illlce to the government dock. In faot. It is only a few vards fit in any point on the Island to the watei and when the tide is at the highest point the sea 'ets back through most of the stioots and leaves a white filnpe of silt along the gutters when the tide goes out and the .salt soaked i. nth dries. EXCITING RACES Fp thinugh the narrow stioets, which lead f i cun the cable office to the wharf some vny Inteie-Jtlng and exciting races have taken place during the l.ist few weeks When the tu-wspipiT des patch boat come In from the gulf they elwnjs land as near to the cable olllce ns possible, and when the coriespond ents land at the same time th" race for the cable otilce Is more Intel estlng than any steeplechase ecr lun Simo of them after a long cruise go staggeiing nnd reeling on their sea legs, like drunken men Some aie weak from, seasickness, and otheis .ire limping from hiulsas received fiom being pitched about In the rough sea. When ho handed In the lout despatch, the censor met him at the receiving desk nnd with a kindly smile, handed IkicIc the first despatch with the words, "All fleets look alike to me," wtlttcn ncross It AMUS1NO EXPERIENCES. Hut the censor has had some very nmuolng experiences with otheis than the newspaper men. Repeatedly he has been seveiely rebuked for holding up private messages which he believed to bo cipher despatches for newspaper men. The pionrletor ot one of the gambling rooms heie cabled north the other day for a new roulette wheel. He gavo full description of I ho kind he wanted, and reciuested an Immcdlato answer. After waiting twenty-four hours without lecelvlng nny reply, ho went to the cable ofllto to see It his inc-Hsage had been sent Ho found that the censor hnd held It up, believing It to bo a cipher message to a newspaper. The censor apologized nnd permitted the message to go through. An answer came back within a few hours, nnd the proprletoi had n bright new roulette table within a week. The censor, however, Is greatly liked by the newspaper men, and spends most of his time c hatting with them on the Rreat porch ot the Key West hotel. He is an ofllcer ot the regular army, and simply discharges faithfully and well the duties assigned to him. Such of the correspondents as hav e attempt ed to send nothing but vei Hied and undisguised facts have fared best at his handu. SPANISH WAR NEWS. A Rosy Despatch Published in the Itiipnrciul. Madiid, May II The Impaiclal to day publishes a dispatch from Havana, giving another extrnordinuiy Spanish veislon of a wai eplsodn. It sas: "On Friday the gunboats Conde de Venadito and Xueva Espanu Mcanud out of the haibor and attacked an American squadron of two cruisers and live auxiliary uulsers which were out side The Spanish vessels fired twenty shots nnd the Americans eight, the lat ter appaicntly retreating damaged. Thrco crowded tugs followed the gun boats, the people on board cheering them." It would seem possible that the facts upon which the Imjiarcial's dispatch Is based aie to lie found In the report from the Associated Press dispatch boat Kute Spencer, iiled at Key West and sent out today. Two Spanish ships did steam out of Havana hai bor nnd tried to chaw some of our vessels under the guns of the heavy Spanish bat teries The nise was unsuccessful, though the Santa Clara battery sent some badly nlmed shells nt our ships, which replied hy driving ,he two Span iards back into Havana.
