Two Sewer Contracts Let in Joint

pany to erect safety gates at Belmont
and Scott streets. It also concurred

Common council ordered the bills of
the board of revision and aiqieal and
city cleric paid, read Its minutes and
adjourned sine die.
At the Joint session councils opened
bids on the proposed Summit avenue,
Spring street and Seventh avenue sow
ers. Tho Summit avenue contract was
let to X. II. O'Hara, of Scranton, at
$1.09 a foot. Flannagan & O'Hara, of
Scranton, were awarded the contract
for Spring street and Seventh avenue
at $1.25 a foot. They are not allowed
anything extra for the man IioIch.

lief footing up to $218.00 granted. The

Columbia Hose company have Invited
the Mitchell and Cottage companies to
Join with them In attending the funeral
ol the late J. P. Mollltt who was for
many yeam one of the leading members
of No. 5, The funeral will take olace
this morning at U.30 o'clock, with a
requiem mass at St. Rose's church.
The Elite Social club Saturday Issued

A regular meeting of the Blakely
board of health was held at the coun
cil rooms last Saturday evening with
all members present, except Sylvanus
Smith. After the reading of the min
utes of the previous meeting, the sec
retary and health officer made the fol
lowing monthly report: Burial permits
granted, 1C, of which only three died
In tho borough, from the following
cauees: Appendicitis, 1; Injury from
falling downstairs, 1; apoplexln, 1. The
mortality of the borough was very
small as compared with the same
month In 1S37. Number of births re
ported, 2; contagious diseases reported,
10; all diphtheria from the First and
Third wards. The committee on appro
priation reported progress. This com
pleted the business of the vear. The
board adjourned sine die. After ten
minutes recetss the secretary was chos
en to act as president pro tern, for
reorganization. Mr. George XV. Slt
graves, who was appointed by the
council as a member tn succeed Mr.
Sylvanus Smith for the next live years,
whose term had expired, presented his
certificate and wart duly accented. The
following were duly elected ns officers
for the coming years: Henry L.
Thompson, president; F. L. Van Sickle,
M. D.. health officer; secretary nnd
sanitary offlcer. S. M. Rogers. The
salaries were fixed the same as Inst
year: Health officer, $70; secretary, $30;

Tho funeral services over the re
mains of tho late John A. Williams
occurred from his late home yesterday,
afternoon In North Taylor. His resi

church. At the close of the services
the remains were borne to their last
resting place In the Washburn street

The last of a series of local institutes
In this district wns held In the central
school on Saturday afternoon. There
was a large attendance and tho exer
cises were thoroughly enjoyed by atl.
Professor M. W. Cummlngs presided.
Tho programme opened with a chorus,
"Our Native Land Columbia," by the
institute. In the absence of Prof. M. J.
Lloyd, Prof. J. L. Richards, of Dickson,
gave an address on reading, which wns
very earnest and wns listened to with
much Interest. "The Gipsy Countess,"
a duet, was very sweetly sung by Miss
Mnggle Thomas nnd Master Edward
Phillips. A class of young pupils gave
a drill In music, under the direction of
Prof. T. XV. Watklns, and their work
was heartily applauded. Prof. George
Howell, superintendent of the Scran
ton city schools, then gave a very In
teresting nnd Instructive talk on "Mem
ory." A solo, entitled "Gaily Chant the
Summer Birds," was rendered tn an
excellent manner by Miss Anna Brown,
nftor which Prof. T. J. McCannon, prin
cipal of the Wllkes-Barre High school,
gave a very forcible address on "Prac
tical Science," and performed a num
ber of experiments In chemistry, which
were very Interesting. Following was
a song, entitled "I am the Miller's
Daughter," rendered in a pleasing way
by Miss Annie Jones. After a few re
marks by Superintendent J. C. Taylor,
congratulating the committee on the
success of their efforts, the programme
was closed with the rendition of "Those
Evening Bells," by the institute.
